Yes, you can replace it. I did on my 03 Evo 8 along with the knob...and revised cables and gears.

Just take your time and read up on it before tearing it apart.

Thanks! Not to appear dense, but by "reading up" are you referring to a repair manual, or just finding other posts from people who have done the same?

I guess I'm answering my own question, but it appears someone had luck in removing the control unit and popping the stem out from underneath somehow.

Hey HVAC geniuses. I have a question.

My AC blows ICE COLD... as long as I'm moving.

You're all going to say - it's the compressor fan. And normally I would think you are right, because I don't have one, but that's a recent development. I had the same issue with the AC last summer when my fan was functioning properly. The motor went out about 2 months ago and was squealing like a pig, so I removed it.

While I definitely plan on replacing the fan soon, I don't think that's 100% my problem.

If I rev the car to about 1500, AC blows ice cold, low side pressures get in-check, and the pipe gets ice cold. When I let it idle (around 900) the hose is warm and my pressures are all nutty.

Clutch is engaged and not slipping, btw.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks,
Brady

Maybe its in your compressor then. Or poor wiring/operation of your fan. Those could both be related to the motor rpm's.

Back on subject, I realize myself and others still have this problem. I will be pulling my dash out soon for the repair and will be including lots of pic to help anyone who may be looking.

Do a lot of the early 2000 Evo's have problematic HVAC's? Or is it just bad luck?

Thanks. I have a second compressor. I may rent a vacuum and swap it.

HVAC Repair - MEGA Guide

Removing the HVAC control unit is a task that needs to be accomplished with great care. Only a ac system repair professional can easily handle such a task of replacing an ac system.

I installed the revised gears and lubed all moving parts a few years ago and now my cable is acting up again. I think it's the cable that's the problem, with that kink in it.
