I'll work on this as soon as I can. I no longer administer the server that file was hosted on so they probably expunged it. I apologize.

A mouse got into my ducts and built a nest where the cabin filter goes. Unfortunately, the cabin filter was never put in and the fan allowed some of the nesting material past. It appears some of the grass clogged the condensation drain and it also clogged the heater core. Is there a way to get to the box to vacuum out the core and unclog the drain without removing the whole dash? Can I remove the fan motor box from the passenger side and get to it from there? Any ideas how it got into there? Anyone with the same experience and if so, how did you resolve this?

Thanks for this great guide and thread. It's been very helpful.

After a thorough check of all my systems, I've determined that my problem lies with the blend door. My cables are fine, the shaft (which broke previously and was replaced) is fine, the gears have been upgraded to the new model, but the blend door is just sticky and is very difficult to move. I lubed the gears and all moving parts, but it didn't help much.

Short of tearing down the dashboard to access the door, I'm wondering if there are any (temporary) short cuts i can take. I read another post asking if it would be okay to spray lithium grease down the center vents in hopes that it would lubricate the blend door tracks/gears. What about finding a way to squirt through a small straw/tube some lithium grease through a crack, crevice, or hole somewhere. My Lancer has been great, but this problem is just a huge pain now.

Thanks.

Did you find a place to buy the shaft?

Here is what I did and it has been working just fine:

1. Bought a bolt, drilled out the center that could fit the center of the remaining shaft in.
2. Used a dremel and cutting wheel to cut the bottom half into 4 quarters that would slide between the wings/flanges.
3. Grinded the top half to fit into my knob.
4. Mixed some two part epoxy and lathered the shaft, slid the bolt on and let it dry. another coat around it and down to the base after the first stuff dried overnight.
5. Knob back on.
6. Drank a beer.

Or if you're talking about the actual knob itself go to a junk yard and you can use one off of any lancer or late model Galant or a lot of mitsu's use that knob for the heater actually.

Hi All! I'm a little confused and need some help. I just snapped off the shaft that the knob fits on to. On the one hand a lot of people say you have to replace everything, but at the same time I see people buying a new shaft and knob.

Can the shaft and knob be replaced easily, or does the whole unit need replacing? This is a 2002 Lancer, so I don't think buying a whole new unit is an option for me.

Thanks for any clarification.

Dan

There was a guy on ebay selling them....the link I posted is probably dead or may show you similar products...I didn't check.

I just checked on the link....you may be able to still find one...I don't know what a 2002 Lancer knob looks like but click on the link and go from there!

Yeah I saw that, too. But, I wanted to be sure there was a way to replace it before buying one. Can I just pull out the old one and shove the new one in?

I should also mention that I understand that the problem is not the shaft itself and is more likely the door or the cable, etc. However, it is an old car and I just want it to work a little longer before I get a new car, so I'm not looking to solve the root cause. I just need a knob that I can use for a while longer.
