So is this an option for those just wanting to replace the heater shaft???

I found the same ebay item and wanted to know if anyone has successfully replaced their heater control SHAFT in their Evo or is the just for the Lancer?

I drive a 2003 Evo 8.

Awesome thread. I changed the gears and that fixed my problem. I'm so glad it wasn't the mixbox! (knock on wood)

I just pulled apart the assembly and it appears to be the correct part. I am going to order one and install it.

I have received the part and am happy to report that it is the exact same. My knob shaft is in full again.

I am probably going to order the plastic shaft and replace my busted one. I have yet to pull the HVAC unit out and disassemble it. How long did it take to replace? Any issues you experienced/tips to share? Any help would be appreciated while I gather parts to fix mine.

I sent this to another member this morning to try and explain some of the process. Hope it helps.

I have to recommend getting the revised gear set as well to help prevent future breaks.

I would put a couple of hours aside. It is really not that hard to get to. The main issue is with adjusting the gears to meet up just right.

Remember that the dial causes the main gear to turn in the same direction. So you turn the temp dial clockwise so will the main gear for it under the dash. Also lightly adjust the screw under the dials to help how hard the dial is to turn. I had it too loose so it did not "click into" max a/c. Gave the screw a little turn and it was perfect.

When pulling the knob out it will cause a little gear it fall out of place. You will need to get that in place and adjusted just right to have full range of motion with the dial. I recommend looking at the other gear still in place to get an idea of how it wants to be. This is one spot that I recommend starting from completely clockwise or counter clockwise, not some random spot. It makes it easier to line every thing up.

When getting the circuit board out you will have to pull it gently forward to get to two clips behind it to remove a connector. Make sure that every thing is pushed back and remove the clips and connector. Then it should come out.

With the circuit board out you can now get to that gear that connects to the shaft that fell out when you removed the old shaft. Get the knob inserted through the board into the small gear (pinion) and get that lined up with the longer flat gear (rack) on one end that way you have full range of motion.

I am considering writing up a how to with pictures after trying to simply explain it to you .

It is not that hard though. Just sounds annoying. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

The controls are sold as a unit so the service manual does not show anything inside the unit.
