I have a viper 791xv which is a remote starting model. It has an analog input to activate the remote start. I wired up a button to that and can one touch start the car without the keys. Like any remote start if you press the brake before putting in the keys it will kill the engine. I also have a kill switch that disables the remote start and this button in case i need to leave it in gear or other misc. reasons.

This could be a cool anti-theft device if you hide the button in a hard to see spot.

I had a friend who wired up a pushbutton start without needing the key....

He wired into other components and made starting the vehicle a little "tricky".

Basically without ignition his horn wouldn't actually fire. To start the car you would get in, hold down the horn, and hit the button. No thief will ever try honking the horn while at the same time pressing the button. He used a 3 second delay to fire the relay that reconnected the horn since it would sometimes honk the horn if the engine started easier (like warm starts).

We thought about other ideas like 3 switches. One switch would have 3 settings (on,neutral,off). Each would have to be in one exact configuration such as (1: off, 2: neutral, 3: off) or else the horn honks from pressing the start button instead of turning the starter. Park in a good area, leave them set. Bad area, change up your switches when getting out. Use 4 or 5 switches if you are paranoid and want more combinations.

Of course this was with Mustangs but I think the same should be possible in an Evo. Things like this are less secure, but given unlimited time, anything is really insecure. You just need ways to alert people nearby that idiots are messing with your car..... Using horns or maybe extra loud air horns could help.

As someone mentioned above;

To start the car;

a) put key in and turn
b) press button

If someone wanted to steal your car, went in with a SCREW driver (lets just say), he still wouldn't be able to start the car, UNLESS he knew where that "Button" is..... that's actually quite functional if you ask me, and nowhere near rice.

hmmm.....
great idea and nice write up.

or the non ricer way..

a) put key in and turn to start the car.
done.

How is that "quite functional" since you want us to ask you?
Start buttons are functional when it is not required to put the key in the ignition first.
Just hop in and push the button.

If someone wanted to steal your car with a screwdriver, with or without that gay button, they wouldn't be able to. immobilizer requires a signal from the chip in the key.

Thats a little better. But to much work
Its just easier to put the key in and turn. Hes on the right track though.

Only way I can see this functional and work is with an alarm with a **** load of kill features. If a nice alarm can be installed to cut all power to ignition and starter while armed then it would be a great solution. All you do is unlock the car with the remote and hop in and push the start button.

If a thief tried hopping in the alarm would go off and not allow power to be sent to either ignition or starter.

i dont know. i haven't been present when it happens.

there are ways around it though. like swapping in an ecu with immobilizer turned off.
a simple screwdriver alone will not start the car

im not a car thief though so i dont know exacty how they do it.
