noob boost gauge install question

Okay.. I know there are a thousand topics on installing boost gauges. I cant find one that exactly helps me. I bought a garrett mechanical boost gauge

http://www.frsport.com/Garrett-Turbo...SI_p_7793.html

I understand on what to do with the vacuum hose but im a little confused on the wiring. I have an orange wire that says "connect to 12v lighting" I seen a few threads say get extra wiring and a fuse tap and plug it into your cluster fuse position. I guess that can work (let me know if there is an easier way).

I also have a black wire which i understand it the ground wire. So im assuming to get extra wiring and screw it down somewhere.

Now lastly I have a Red wire that says "12v ignition switch (+)" I have the no idea what to do with this one. I read some stuff on getting the wires from behind the radio but i want to put the gauge on my steering column.

And also.. If i have to get extra wiring do i have to get the same gauge wire? How can i find out what gauge this wire is? Ill appreciate any help i can get thanks.

the red wire and the black is really all you need to worry about. those are to give it power and to ground the gauge. the orange is the dimmer i believe, you tap it to the cluster because it'll dim the gauge when u turn on the lights, such that it wont be bright and take ur attention away from driving at night.

i'm pretty sure you have more than enough wire to do the install if your going to install on your steering column. u can get any gauge but because of resistance people tend to stick with the same gauge wire, in MOST cases the wire gauge is 16gauge wire.

there is a thread in the HOW-TO section for installing boost gauge. theres different ways to do it. u can tap the red wire into the fuse box ignition to power it or do what I did and tap into the cig lighter (might need extra wire).

heres the thread for the column mount. just search next time.

okay sounds good thanks.. i seen and read the link you posted already but i was just confused because the gauge came with very short wire, maybe about half a foot. So say if i wanted to use the orange so it dims, i just attach that to the cluster fuse and then connect red to the ignition fuse?

dont connect the red to ignition fuse, i think that one is constant HOT. u need to attach to a key ON or ignition ON 12V source like the cig lighter.

heres another location for the dimmer, they tapped into the cluster wire behind the dimmer switch.

make sure u test everything out before putting it all back together. i tapped into the wrong wire (constant 12v) after putting everything back and had to retake everything apart.

thanks that linked helped alot. I dont really know what u mean by connect the red to "a key ON or ignition ON 12V" but i was thinking i might not need the red wire, i think as long as the ground and the orange in the cluster it will work when the car is on.

Not sure if this was clarified but figured I'd do so for the OP.

I believe what he was explaining was to connect the wire where there is power given AFTER the key is turned, for example: Radio, Cig lighter, Dimmers, etc.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Key on source means that the wires only get power to them with the ignition key is powered to on.. for example if you ran it to the battery direct your gauge would always be getting power
