i just went to nikons website and read this:
if i were to purchase a camera, (new or used) i assume i should look for a lense kit that comes along with it? - any suggestions on those if i went with a nikon
Fast, accurate 3-area auto focus: The D40's advanced 3-area AF system and the refined algorithms inherited from more advanced Nikon digital SLR cameras deliver fast, efficient and precise auto focus. AF refinements deliver greater precision with fast, more consistent subject acquisition and improved focus tracking for consistently sharper pictures.
personally i would go a step up from the d40 or go with the canon xsi with kit lens...before you dump a lot of money into photography get a basic kit with a decent flash and go from there...
I say buy what is in your price range for now. Photography is expensive and through the years you will acquire alot of lenses and possibly bodies. If you spend over 3k on something now and come to find out that this profession is not for you, then you have wasted money. B&H is who I buy from for all my gear, good luck!

As for questions about the camera. I agree with what other members are suggesting.
1. Avoid the D40. It's just not worth it without the built-in Autofocus
2. Get a slightly used camera from ebay. For ~$450-$550 shipped you can get a Nikon D50 or Canon XTi used in good condition or a reburbished one. That would be the best choice.
3. Keep in mind you'll also have to spend money on necessary acessories such as a good carrying bag, 4 gig or higher worth of good quality memory car (no ebay knock offs - you will risk losing your pictures), a CP (circular polarizer) and a UV Filter, also i you can afford it an extra battery is a life saver
- I got 3 batteries for my XSi
...all charged up and ready to go...just in case
