One tech question -- Do you need to worry about engine heat being too much for those remote canisters? I would have thought that those could go someplace more protected. I didn't appreciate how hot things get under there on track until I melted my Aquamist parts, which were located about where you have those canisters.
Rich,

yeah heat is a concern.... we put thermal baggies on them... just havent done it yet,

we also have a ton of temp strips that we will be testing heat in engine bay locations..

we still have to swain coat the new manifold, gold foil the ic pipes, an make a heat shield behind the manifold to direct the heat out of the hood.

we are also raising the back of the hood slightly to help evacuate heat.

- she is pretty, cant wait to get some "rash" on her..

Have you used Swain coating in road race applications before? I had my ported stock manifold, turbine housing, and O2 housing all Swain coated. The coating looked great for 2 years of street and autocross driving. But it only took a couple of track weekends to really tear it up. There's still a layer on there, but a lot of it flaked off and it lost it's pristine white color. It's more of an industrial gray now I think I remember reading on here that AMS had given up on Swain coating because it didn't stick to their manifolds very well over time.

I have a similar case where I used a PPI coating on my hotside and it was perfect on the street. After 2 track days is was coming off.

Rich,

we had their coatings on the endurance car manifolds and inconel exhaust pipes....

it worked awesome...

the issues we have seen that you described, has generally been like this..

stock manifold, o2 housng, etc... CAST parts... we've seen them flake...

or, manifolds that are BRAND new and have never reached operating temps...

I think the material breathes and bubbles the coatings off from underneath...

we have many clients with ported manifolds and SWAIN that have flaked.... however.. when we've run tubular manifolds that have gotten hot, never a problem, hence why we didnt do ours right away.

cheers

^ Makes sense to me. Maybe we will have to try and coat my tubular manifold and see how it holds up.

That rings a bell. 8-10 years ago when I was into modding my Camaro, I remember that people had better luck getting high temp coatings to stick to their headers if they heat cycled the headers first, then took them off and sent them off to be coated. Huge pain in the neck, but apparently it worked.

Now I want a tubular manifold to try this on my Evo

well,

i havent updated the thread in awhile...

so here is where we are...

all of you that were very excited about our radiator and vertical intercooler design... dont be anymore the intercooler was not up to the task...

it was a 1350CFM rated Bell core, with internal baffle's and such.. and was still not doing a great job of cooling... timing had to be retarded up top off of IAT's because it was getting so hot (gaining 40 degrees by redline)...

so, we now have the same 3.8" garrett core that BR uses on their race kit and we use on our new FMIC for the 8/9. David was gracious enough to help us out with the core, as part of his participation as a sponsor on this project...

It is no secret that we work very closely with JM Fabrications and Blouch Turbo... Blouch doing our BBK turbos, and some other special sauce.. (well actually we dont sell a turbo that doesnt come from their shop).... JM fab does custom fab work for us on projects we have... such as another time attack car we are doing for Ryan Doi of Forged Performance which will be competing in the TA modified class..

Our car is currently at JM fab... after a summer spent working at blouch on sundays fabricating a kit based off of the full race manifold... we decided to re-engineer the turbo kit after preliminary testing.... the twin scroll setup with dual recirc'd dump tubes made it too difficult for us to change turbos on the car, without taking EVERYTHING off.... this was me being too ambitious with the design....

So, JM fab is currently building us a Tial V-band housing manifold for the same turbo (our TAK 33R)... with custom upper and lower piping.... it will still be short route piping (as you will see in the pics).... and has allowed us to drop another 10-12 lbs off of the front of the car...

we have used more quick disconnects..on the ic pipes and now the coolant lines on the turbo.... this will allow us to change a turbo and/or hotside in about 10 minutes without draining the coolant or even pulling the radiator out of the car.... or even taking the front undertray off...

JM fab does the nicest work we've seen (even with our background in ALMS/grand-am/etc)...

the car will be back on the dyno next week... we should see our 500whp/460wtq goal on 93 octane... then we will do the race fuel (or E85) tuning... and hit the track in about 2 weeks..

I also need to thank David from DHP composites... he did our front splitter and is building us our rear diffuser off of my design, which will complete the flatbottom design of the car... and this setup will be available for sale...

so,

here is the eye candy..

we will be able to offer this setup to serious roadrace clients... the double pass radiator, short path piping, and everything... but it will not be inexpensive...

more pics coming..

cheers

cb

I do need to thank the following for bringing this LONG project together-

Mike, Bob, Phil of Blouch Turbo
Jim, Brent, and the guys at JM FAB
Chet and Ray from advan Yokohama
David, Jrod, Nick at Buschur
Lex at Moton
The guys at Piper Motorsports
Sean from Fidanza
Whiteline
Perrin performance
and many more im sure im forgetting.....
