Evo 7 DIY tails done right

So after seeing multiple evos with their diy evo 7 tails, I have been disgusted. Most of the spray jobs look like crap and they fade and whatnot. I knew what had to be done to make the most authentic looking 7 tails.

My buddy picked up a set of authentic 7 tails for himself, so I snagged up his stock 8 tails and painted them.

These were sprayed with SEM candy Koncentrate mid coat. Its a candy apple read, and its transparent. So I masked off the lines at the bottom of the turn signal with 3/16" tape. Scuffed the whole taillight with a red scotchbrite pad and started spraying. 5 coats of the candy apple red(transparent) and 6 coats of clear. This gives me plenty of clear, in case I want to sand and buff the tails so you cant see or feel the tape lines on the signal part.

I am very pleased with the results.

All the paint I used is a basecoat/clear system. Same stuff you use to paint the car. So you need a paintgun, compressor etc.

Its SEM color horizons candy koncentrate. Candy apple red. You have to mix that 8:1 with a clear binder. Then mix that misture 2:1 with reducer.

Then spray the clear.

Looks good, but if you really wanted them done right you would of painted the housing a chrome red, not the lens. Still better than the stock 8 tails though!

EvoTeyn: You talking about the back of them?

If you are talking about the chrome part thats in the 8s, then no, the 7 tails are not made this way. The authentic 7 tails have the inside of the lens tinted red. The backhousing is still chrome, with a red lens over the top. Thats from everything I have seen and read.

Those look great man! I didnt want to pull the tails apart. I have done that twice to make jdm 8 look a like tails. It is a pita lol.

I figured I would just spray the outside of these. Thats the reason for spraying so many coats of clear. So i can sand and flatten the lines and make them smooth as if it were painted from the inside.

The lense might be tinted red, but it's VERY minimal if it is. I'll see if I can grab a picture of my reverse lights sometime

the housing of the taillight itself is red, and while the lens may be tinted, a vast majority of the red comes from the housing

Good work mate. They look tops.

Just wondering though, can you not import a genuine set of 7 tail lights for a decent price over there??

You can. I paid $50 for these used 8 tails though. I had all the materials sitting in the garage. So I have $50 in an almost set of evo 7 tails.
