To answer the popular question, it only took me 2.75 gallons with the white, 3.5 with the red. The white took five coats. The red took seven coats, with the last two being mixed with glossifier to produce the satin finish.

I put my winter wheels on this weekend, but first I wanted to change them up a bit. I laid a black base then put Gold Metalizer over top. 6 coats total with a little bit of glossifier.

Did my car stain black last week. A week later and Im starting to see it pull up around the door handles. Anyone else ran into this problem? I made sure the car was dry everywhere. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Man, I don't know how I haven't seen this thread earlier... I've dipped my car twice and now it's wrapped. It started off with the Koi Orange, then an Anthracite grey mixture with a metallic flake, and now it's wrapped in 3Ms Satin Ocean Shimmer.

@ vanvorisdj

I have had a few dipped cars and its really hard to get behind the door handles without a ton of build up. Easiest thing to do it take a piece of electrical tape and place it behind the handle, this will hold the dip down and is hardly noticeable. Worked well for me on 2 cars where It started to peel.

i just finished doing my wheels with rattle cans. original plan was to do the faux bronze using a black base with the copper metallizer, but after testing it out on the backside of the wheels, i decided that the tint was too orange-ish. so i went with black followed by the satinizer.

despite warming the cans, shaking well, and using the better nozzle, i still ended up with a rather textured surface. perhaps it was due to the garage temperature being in the 50-55F range. at any rate, i'll probably keep it through summer provided that it holds up to an occasional cleaning.

as a general comment, i doubt that i'll plastidip again. although simple to do, its very time consuming to do properly, and from what i can gather, is not very durable. i'll post pics on friday after the wheels are back on the car.

I dipped my wheels metal flake purple. It's a bit louder than I was expecting but I like it considering I can just peel it off. In retrospect maybe I should have done fewer coats of the metallic flake purple so that it turned out darker.
Notes:
  • I spent 4 cans of black. I think that was 5-6 coats.
  • I spent 3 cans of purple metallic flake, at least 4 coats
  • The metallic flake is based on the clear plasti dip so just like the clear it has a rubbery feel to it unlike the black which is more hard plastic feeling. I read forums and saw people waxing thiers to fix it so I tried some armor-all and that worked quite well. Just wiped it on and it is much less sticky.
  • On the calipers I hit them with high temp silicone black first and then put the plasti dip on top. If I cook the dip I'll just peel it off, no big deal. Just didn't want red calipers under purple wheels.
  • I recommend keeping the wheels flat on their sides until dry between coats. I got anxious and propped them up once and had a thick coat start to run on me. I'm an impatient painter.
