Aftermarket tweeter
Aftermarket tweeter
I just got my new Focal components and I have a question about the tweeter install.
Is it better to install flush mount (cutting the A-pillar cover) or screw it on the pillar (like the original one)?
I think that if you screw it on the pillar you could lose some SQ, maybeI am wrong...
Did anybody try it to see if there is a difference?

which focals did you get? i'm getting the 165k2p's and i'm trying to find out if the tweeter will actually fit (depth wise). i put the utopias in my friends rsx-s but his didn't have any depth issues since they drop in from the top of the dash. as far as sound quality, you've already lost a bunch by mitsu putting the tweeters in the a pillar. a tweeter should be within 6 inches of the woofer (look at all the custom installs. 95% of the tweeters are next to the woofer). putting it behind the grill (a la factory) won't really affect sound quality that much. be sure to amp those focals and get ready for them to really come alive!
The one I got are the 165k2p fx.
They are a new model that just came out in Europe, a friend of mine sent them from Italy, he is a major installer for Focal.
The tweeter should be smaller and the crossover cut is at 3500Hz...
I am going to give them over 200 Watts per channel, the sub will be 2 33KX.
I will try to install them tomorrow, at this point I will mount them behind the grill and then I will decide if it is ok.
I will let you know.

I build sound quality vehicles for a major audio company and here is how it works. The tweeters need to be placed in a manor so that they are both at the same height level and aiming towards the drivers seat. If you can flush mount them and achieve this you are good. It is a very bad idea to mount them in the pillars because they become way to harsh by having them up that high. Having good sound quality means that the sound is imaging to the driver since you will be listening to the system the most. Also, if the crossovers have a negative adjustment on them, try to set the tweeters to - 3dB
Ok guys I gave up...
I flash mounted my tweeter on the A pillar.
So far it looks nice ( I mounted only one, my garage was like a sauna...)
I will post some pictures tomorrow when i finish the job.

Sorry guys if I am late, here are the pictures of tweeters mounted on the A pillar.
I set the tweeter to -6db, they were a little bit too loud for my taste.
I can tell tell that the sound stage is well located above the dash!!!

it looks alright. if i was going to flush mount them like that, i would have gotten pillars from a base lancer with the 4 speaker sound system so i wouldn't have the old tweeter grill behind the tweeter. overall the cut looks clean though.
yeah my gf has a 04 oz and her pillars are the same as mine (with the tweeter cutout) but i know the base models only have 4 speakers and not 6 so they don't have the tweeter cutouts so that should work. could always just go to a dealer and check it out that way. you could also try the private/for sale forum here. maybe someone with a base model would be selling them. could also post a want ad there too.
