Whether or not they will improve after I have a few miles on them I do not know. I wonder whether the others who use this tire have the same view?

when up to temp on the track, the ra-1's have quite a bit more grip than the stocks.
on the street i couldn't agree more.
to me, ra-1's are a bit too soft on the street(when warm) and pick up stuff more easily.
so they tend to puncture easier. also if it's too cold out they actually seem to have less
grip than the stocks. this is coming from someone who used to drive on the ra-1's about
7-8 months out of the year during the trackday "season" instead of changing out to
stocks. at the time i didn't have two sets of wheels so it was more of a hassle to change.
i did this on two different cars and now have finally gotten my act together and bought
a second set of wheels.
From what I have heard, these are all good replacements for stock if you are looking for non R compound:
Falken 215
Falken 615 (out in late March hopefully)
Kumho MX (only $130 each!)
BFG KD's (expensive)
Bridgestone S03's
