Please add for a great winter tire the Hankook W300 Icebear. It comes in 235/45/17 and is speed rated. It is the only true 4-season tire that can be had for a reasonable price that has the snowflake symbol. I drove on these all winter and during most of the rainy spring. They perform fairly well in the snow, ok in ice, and even fairly well in the dry (Turn-in of course is not very sharp but there is grip!).

use the calculator you'll see that 245 40 and 255 35 are similar in size with the difference being that 245 is thinner and will buy you more fender clearance.

Nice job Triny, very comprehensive and informative. I can imagine how long you spent researching and writing this.
Speaking of research, where did you get your data from?

The only thing this thread needs to make it complete, is the effective operating temperatures of these tires and the recommended PSI for daily driving and performance driving.

This is a great thread with a lot of helpful information. I've already picked out my next set of tires.

I just got a set of 18x8.5 +32 wheels...What tire size do you recommend?
I'm thinking about 255/35/18...is it ok for that off-set??

Pictures are smaller now .

The car handles ok. But the tires have softer sidewalls.

I measured 123 F after solocrossing in the center. now, I do not know what would be the best temp, but is the info I have. This was at 43 psi (front).
In the street I'm running at 41 psi front and still feels softer than the 046's.
