Are there any downsides to running 235/40 on stock wheels?

great post with lots of useful info.

I have another question though; I want to run the TALLEST tire possible on stock wheels (04 EVO) with stock suspension. Reason being is I want to increase my top speed in 4th gear for the 1/4 mile. I've done some quick calcs and 245/50/17 would be about 26.6" tall, but I wouldn't mind going taller if thats possible.

Let's talk for a minute about the benefits of 18" wheels over 17" wheels.

I'm upgrading my stock wheels this winter, money isn't an object for that project. I don't trakc or auto-x the car at all. I like the look of 18" wheels on the Evo.

Anyone have any significant downsides to running 18x8.5"s on a street car?

thanks

I'm planning on running a 245 tire on my new 18x9 wheels but not sure if I should go with 255 and go through the trouble of rolling my fender lip. anyone have good things to say about the yokohama es100 tire ?

So if I was considernig running a different tire then the RT-615, then I prob want ot stay away from the 255/40/17 size right?

I'm considering 245/40/17 but have been told that won't work to well either.

I've searched for long periods and can't figure out what route to go.

Inprogress - both sizes you mention will work fine on stock wheel/suspension. I run the 245/40R17 with no problems. What's your setup that will cause issues?

Im not sure, I heard about it being too short, i forget what exactly was said. I was looking at the 255/40/17 in the BF GOod T/A KDW 2's or the Goodyear F1 GSD3's, but in this size i could look into the Falken RT-615s too, i just want something with decent treadwear

I didn't have time to swap my wheels at the track yesterday, so I ended up tracking my evo on Azeni RT615s (245/45/17 on stock wheels). The track was wet in the morning and dry in the afternoon. so I got to test these tires in both wet and dry conditions.

In the wet, they gripped pretty good. I was driving super conservative cuz I didn't want to slide off the track. When the tires broke loose, they were predictable. They broke loose gradually (a very good thing), so there's no sudden loss of traction.

To my surprise, the Azenis handled and gripped pretty well in the dry. Comparable to the advans from what I remember. They are probably almost as loud as the advans at the limit, so they give good feedback. I know I was pushing these tires past their limits under braking because I was on my Hawk DTC race pads. I kicked on ABS in almost every hard braking zone. The tires began to get greasy towards the end of the 20 minute sessions, but there wasn't that much loss of grip.

Overall, I say the Azeni RT615s are well worth the money.

Which tire would be best ran with Work XD9's 18x9 with 30mm offset? I've been considering the 255/35/18's but the price difference is substantial...Would I have any problems per say with the 245/40/18's??

8.5" is bad for winter, the tires will be too wide for snow and judging by your location - you get SNOW hehe. i bought a set of rims just for winter tires. 17x8 5zigen fn01r-c wheels with narrower than stock winter bridgestone blizzak ws-50 tires in 225/50/17.
wide tires on snow will give you less overall grip, since you asked about winter and downsides.
