Question about the need to bleed the ABS unit?

Question Question about the need to bleed the ABS unit?

Got a question... I'm installing some StopTech SS brakelines and flushing my stock brake fluid with Motul RBF 600 and I was wondering what is the procuedure to purge the ABS unit. I read this article at StopTech and I was wondering if this is a problem on the EVO VIII. I read through the Service Manual and they didn't mention a specific procedure for bleeding the ABS unit. So do I need to worry about this?

If the manual doesn't mention it then I wouldn't worry about it. There's so little fluid in the ABS unit anyway. Just use the ABS once in awhile, and it'll get flushed the next time you bleed.

Did the svc manual recommend doing the bleed with the engine running?

I'm going to bleed the brakes per the Service Manual then activate the ABS and re-bleed after a few days just to make sure I get 100% of the old crap out of the lines.

The manual didn't say anything about the engine being on. But I will double check because brake system is covered over several sections in the manual.

BTW, I just found this picture on StopTech and they look sweet.

Bill, did you get that Motul locally? I'm probably going to do a big fluid change at 10k miles. I was thinking of throwing synthetic oil in the diffs and trans, and go to some nicer brake fluid too. I'd rather not have to order the stuff I can help it.

Nope, I got the SS lines and two bottle of Motul from Vivid Racing for $162 with FedEx ground included. What synthetic fluids are you thinking of using for the transmission and diffs?

The manual does say to have engine running and to bleed the lines in the following sequence: passenger rear, driver front, driver rear, passenger front.


A power bleeder is the only way to do the job right. Motive Products makes the best one for the $$$.

I was thinking of using what Shawn recommends in this post. Redline MT-90 and 75-90 depending on the GL-spec required for the part. I think the trans wants GL-4, so that'll be the MT-90. The transfer wants GL-5, so that'll get 75-90. I don't know what the rear diff requires, but one of those two will work.

I was considering going to shockproof, I used to use it in my Subaru, but it appears you get most of the benefits by just moving to the regular redline synthetics.

I'm pretty sure I've seen synthetic fluids somewhere recently. Maybe it was at protech. I think they had Royal Purple stuff there. I wonder if there's any redline locally. And I wonder if you can find high perf brake fluid locally.

Bringing this post back tom the dead instead if starting a new one.

Do we know for certain if we do or do not need to flush out the ABS system?
I'm ordering a Motive Power Bleeder this week and while I'm bleeding the brakes, I wanted to make sure whether or not the ABS had to be pumped out as well.

Any more info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

No need to cycle the abs just don't run the reservoir dry and your life will be much easier. And while your at it flush the clutch system as well.

Ever figure out a way to run the ABS module without the use of evoscan or a OEM scan tool?
