Removing the brake disk shields Good - Bad - Why

On my other previous track/dialy car, a WRX, I removed all the brake disc shields. My reasoning was that they would cool better. I serviced and checked the brakes often and never had an issue.

My Evo brakes like a brick wall with DTC60s. At my last track day at CA Speedway though I got some fender liner bits stuck between the shield and inside against the disk. I don't have brake fade, actually ever, but I was thinking to remove the shields to allow for better cooling.

Let me know what your guys, especially the track gurus think and why. Thanks

M

Make sure to put a heat shield of some sort over your ball joints or expect to have melted dust covers.

+1. The shield is there to also keep heat away from the wheel sensors along with not melting the rubber dustcovers on your ball joints. Maybe coating the shield with some thermal dispersant coating?? Curious if that would even be worth it.

I removed the heatshield and added to ducting. The dust cover argument carries merit but I have not had that issue in the 5yrs of tracking this Evo with similar brake power as you (DTC-60's or RB ET900s).

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.
Shields are needed. Protects suspension and alignment parts from heat and dust. Shields water from inside of rotor (thermal shock issue in rain). Directs some air to the rotor surface, rather than allowing the air to to where it wants to flow.

If you want better cooling - ducts. Proper, attached to the caliper - ducts.
