Issues: AEM Boost Gauge & Rexspeed Steering Wheel Carbon Pod (Evolution X)

This is a repost of what I said on ClubCJ but hope that it helps other Evo X drivers who happen to stumble upon this thread when searching for information on installing the AEM Digital Boost Gauge (30-4406) into the Rexspeed Steering Wheel Carbon Pod (gauge pod) for the 2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X. Pictures/links below FYI.

Basically the issue is that the gauge pod from Rexspeed is moulded to fit directly on top of the steering wheel column. Looks fantastic, well packaged, high quality, etc... but what isn't obvious from the website is that you need to use a FLUSH MOUNT GAUGE. I personally wanted the AEM boost gauge from below and checked it was 52mm which fits with the Rexspeed specs per the website, but when we went to install it today an interesting issue arose- the bezel stick outs so much that it actually blocks the steering wheel from turning.

Attempting to turn the wheel forcefully simply leads to the gauge pod/plastics popping off.

As a result, we spent considerable time experimenting with other options and eventually had to go to the local Harvey Norman and buy a 58mm lens cover thing for a digital SLR camera. This was to substitute the bezel which on the AEM gauge holds the lens in place as well as looking fashionable.

This is a very messy exercise requiring experimenting with glue and cutting/etc but eventually the final result is this:

Other things we tried include cutting/sawing the bezel to make it fit flush but it's too thick still (as the tread stops).

We hope that this thread will hopefully come up in search engines when people google "Evo X AEM boost gauge install" and "Rexspeed CF gauge pod" as a bit of a review of the importance of considering the flushness of the gauge when using this pod.

Thanks to Sean (spareparts) and Shane (LZY_EYE) from ClubCJ for doing all the actual work and the thinking

As another tip, don't seal the CF gauge pod onto the steering wheel column using the tape UNTIL you're 100% happy with the gauge because once it's in and sealed, it's damn difficult to get it out again and to plug wires in/etc.

I see they used an Auto Meter gauge. It really shouldn't matter as long as the gauge is 52mm but with some Rexpeed stuff you have to be careful as I also have had problems with some cf stuff from them fitting. Maybe the bezel on the Auto Meter is smaller....I dunno

I ordered the dual pod steering wheel gauge cluster and also AEM gauges so hopefully mine will work with them

Your gauge look skewed to the right in both pictures. That would so irritate me.

Good point. I noticed this as well and upon closer inspection the gap between the bezel and the left side of the gauge pod, and the same corresponding gap on the right side, is markedly different (i.e. you can see the gap on the left but not on the right!).

At first I thought this was intentional but now that I look closer, the original Rexspeed picture shows the gauge pod/hole should be in the centre and not so far to the side. This looks like a manufacturing defect. I'll drop a note to Adam and see what he reckons because if that's the case, I might push for a refund/exchange since the product doesn't meet my expectations based on the information provided.

Thought I'd add some more insights into the Rexspeed gauge pod.

1. Gauge pod WILL block the bottom half of your dash display (but not your tacho/speedo) depending on your height- this means that you can't see which gear you're in when driving in manual mode on the SST. For me this was an issue since Evo X steering wheels can't be adjusted for reach nor can the seats be height adjusted hence I couldn't do anything else.

2. In the Evo X, the gauge pod is NOT suitable for gauges which have a thick bezel or are not flush mount such as the AEM line of digital gauges. This is due to the bezel protruding out from the gauge pod and blocking the steering wheel which cannot be adjusted for reach in the Evo. In CJ Lancers this should not be an issue since you can adjust the reach.

Btw this is what I ended up settling on- a cheap generic mount which screws into the steering wheel column cover. That part FYI is a cheap part to replace from Mitsubishi (<$50aud).

I had the same problem. My wife laughed in my face when The gauge popped off while backing out of my driveway and cutting the wheel It's a huge design flaw.

i had issues with the steering wheel pods on my 8 similar to this....so i've stayed away from it....guess same thing happens in the X's, :/

Sorry to hear about your woes. There are some pretty nice setups alternate from the steering wheel mount location.
