Remove cubby to tap power from cig lighter

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the console piece that will allow me to tap the power going to the cig lighter.

I've scoured the boards and haven't seen anything. I can get the cup holder and shift cover off, but that's as far as I can get.

Any pics/suggestions/how to's??

Thanks!

I believe you have to remove a couple of screws from the base of the center console and remove the entire piece running between the seats.

Why don't you tap from the fuse box?

Good question. Did this with my radar detector with add-a-fuse and it was really simple.

After working in the car audio industry, it really surprises me the number of people who think the only 2 places to get power are the cigarette lighter and the radio.

I did think of tapping the fuse box. The problem was that when I went to my local auto shop the only tap they had for the small fuses was 2-10 volts and I need a 15v. The guy said that he never heard of a tap for 15v with the small fuses.

Is that something I can get online??

BTW Vastevo, I don't work in the car audio industry so I'm sorry for asking such a idiotic question!! I thought that is what the forums are for, helping each other out!

That's true, the mini's only go up to 10 volts. What are you hooking up?

I'm trying to power a Sirius dash unit. I did call a few other local shops and one claims to have one that will fit a mini fuse. It has to be off of a 15v fuse. The other problem is that the darn fuse box is so recessed it's hard to get my hands in there.

Would it be easier to run a line into the engine compartment and use the fuse box there??

Fuses are rated for amps, not volts. The Bussman taps can replace any size fuse, but the extra fuse you add for your electronics are limited to 10A, which is more than enough for a Sirius unit.

OK, so here's what I tried. Used the power tap fuse and put it in the cig fuse which is 15 amps. I put two 15 amp fuses in the tap. The cig lighter worked but the unit wouldn't power on. Since the tap had a 10 amp max should I have put a 10 amp fuse in it to power the headunit??

Yeah you should try a 10 in the second slot. They won't turn on if you put in a bigger one.

OK, thanks! I'll try that today and see how it goes. Can't believe I didn't think of that sooner!!

I'll post what happens.

We are here to help each other out, but a much cleaner/safer way is to use fuse taps from the fusebox.

Have you by chance seen the 'mod' to add a terminal block to power all your accessories? I think its in the DIY forum...
