I tapped into the wrong wire for power

I'm wondering if it may have caused damage. This is the passenger side. I read to tap into the big red wire, I thought I found it but I was mistaken. I had the battery disconnected when I did my solder. I am trying to power some gauges. Can anyone tell me what the red wire I originally tapped into is for?

Here is where I tapped:

This is the big fat red wire is where I should have tapped:

Wow..You know it would have been easier to tap into fuse or cig lighter or sumthing.

Agreed. Go with the fuse method, cleaner and potentially less headaches. The door lock fuse should have constant power and Cig. lighter fuse for switched ignition. Sample pic below to get an idea of what tapping the fuse is.

Get yourself a power test light light tool. Power wires are not always color red.

Well, i wanted to tap into that wire behind the glove box because that is where I passed my gauge wires through from the engine side and also my uego wire is coming up from the passenger side floor and it would be a much easier and a shorter run of my wires also since I'm mounting them on top of my radio dash with the ATI 3-pod cluster. You think it's risky to tap directly in like that? I found a guide on here that walked through someone installing their Zeitronix ZT-2 Gauge by tapping into that line, just dummy me didn't see the bigger red wire. Can anyone tell me what the wire I tapped into was for?

When I did my reverse camera I went into the fuse panel with an add a fuse:

How does the test light tool work? Can I test for hot wires without having to tap into them?

The Power test tool is a electrician's best tool. You can also use it around the house, check Christmas light fuse and even use it to check dead fuse or relay under the hood.

Where would I look in the service manual to find out exactly what the wire I spliced into originally was for. I'm trying to find out if what I did could have damaged anything.

Thanks.

I don't think you messed up anything. Its not like you're adding more power to the "big red wire" from the gauge. You're trying to get power from the big red wire so whether it an actual power or not you'll be fine. Just make sure you cover it back up nicely to prevent short circuit and do the fuse tap! A lot easier and safer!
