It was quite the *****.

The relay seems to be quite inexpensive in nature and you could probably keep switching out relays until you burn them all out and then maybe you could get a bulk discount on them. The problem seems to be creeping up when you hit 20K miles or so. I guess it would also depend how often you make your fuel pump go into "High voltage mode."

Its located on the passengers side of the engine on the intake manifold. When you remove the mivec cover you will see the vacuum line from the fpr going directly onto the intake manifold. I used zipties. I can try to take a pic for you later.

+1

I may have this same problem and see possible signs of a leak coming out of this same general area.

I too am leaning out at wot. fpr, is already secured w/a zip tie.

Power mods:
Agency power SRI
Catback Exhaust(used to have a test pipe, back on stock cat now.)
Cobb AP, stg 2

26k miles on my car.

So, just to confirm, everyone fixed this problem by getting a new relay?
I am suspicious of exhaust leaks maybe getting faulty readings to the WB's. I think everyone that has had this issue seems to have a TP or HFC. I used to have one, now the stock cat fits like crap. I can hear a small exhaust leak even with every thing tq'd down.

I tried to get a tune, but because it kept leaning out up top i was unable to.

Well, i found out it was leaning out on the dyno w/a w/b afr gauge and cobb software. still trying to diagnose it.

from what ive read i shouldn't need a fuel pump untill 350-400awhp, so i don't think that is it.

It depends on where your exhaust leak was relative to where they had the Wideband O2 installed to read your AFR's. Mitsubishi replaced my Fuel Pump relay for free since it was a faulty stock part...not saying everyone will be as fortunate. The best way to diagnose if it is the problem is to do what Richard/Kevin/I did and check the relay after you've ruled out if your FPR hose blew off. I also got a new(better fitting) hose from Mitsubishi after that FPR hose blew off the first time. I ran with the horn relay for a good month or so but finally have a new one and my horn relay back in its appropriate place.

part of your problem is the fact that your running a stock cat on a stage 2 tune....that tune is meant for high flow cats/test pipes if I'm not mistaken. I'd invest in a wideband and mount it in the car so you can have a better way to constantly monitor what is going on if you plan on modding further

That is good advice and i am getting one soon. I am ordering a dp first so i can mount it properly. probably another week or so till that gets here(Thanks ETS) I was running a stg 2 but the Cobb pro tuner i went to should have been trying to custom tune the car. so the stage 2 should have no play on why i was unable to get good a/f ratios up top.

I have also replaced my fuel pump relay with the horn relay. I have a new one on order through mitsu. Fpr hose is strapped down with a zip tie. to my knowledge it has not blown off.

As for the w/b it was placed in the exhaust tips by the tuner for a/f readings. the exhaust leak is right behind the cat where the mid pipe mounts up.

to both persons^ THANK YOU FOR THE INPUT its been quite a while since anyone has replied to my initial post!

I had the same problem on my car. I confirmed that the fuel pump relay is bad. Hopefully I'll complete my tune soon
