Tuning Noob

I want to start to tune my X but i have never tuned a car before. I have been doing alot of research on it and i think i might be able to handle doing it. Does anyone know of a cheap place to get the open port 2.0 cable??? Also what gauges do you think i need to get. I do not wanna spend a butt load of money of gauges because i have to buy a labtop haha. Does anyone have a words of advise for me???

No it is not very resource hungry any new laptop should be fine. but upon saying that slower pc = lower samples per sec

Im sure even a netbook would work. And the cheapest I've seen the cable was about $160.
So you've never tuned a car before? Work on cars a lot? Computer savvy? Im just saying, tuning a turbo car yourself without ever tuning a car before, is risky. For about $350 you can get a remote tune, but you'll still need the cable, and a laptop.
But the good news is ECUFlash is free. And if mitsulogger supports the X, its free too. Although, evoscan is what, 25 bucks now?

any newer laptop will be fine for evoscan..

the best thing you can do is log lots of stuff, and look at the logs before making any changes..

you should also strongly consider getting a wideband hooked up so you can monitor your AFR's.

I was thinking about getting the aem uego, but does any other brand have one that is just as good but cheaper???

I have been working on cars ever since i bought my first one when i was 17. I play with computers all day long (I am a Mechanical Engineer), so i think it would be awesome to learn another aspect of "working on cars"

That is cool, man. Being an engineer, and gear head, you'll find this to be fun. The Map Tracer tools are handy to help you see which cells are actually being used in the different load/rpm conditions and what-not. They're free too, and evoscan has one built in i think.

As for widebands, the Innovate LC-1 works pretty good, but its comparatively priced with the UEGO. Im not sure you're going to get one much cheaper than that. You could skip the gauge and go with the 02sensor and controller only, using the laptop to log and monitor AFRs, but its only a few $$ difference. You'll eventually want to get a boost gauge too if youre going to do some serious tuning.

Good luck,

You can probably log the AFR if you use the o2sensor and controller, right? I would think that would be the best route to go. Anyway to monitor the the boost on the labtop too??? It would be kinda nice if the appearance of the car could remain relatively stock so my dealership doesnt bust my *****.

I'd recommend a boost gauge and wb gauge that can be logged by your logger. I prefer zeitronix because it has both gauges in one. Do a lot of research in the 8-9 sections you'll get a lot of ideas.

I'd strongly suggest download a rom from gunzo or whoever and start from there (i'm not sure if we have a thread here about those roms but the other forums have). Exploring is one of the best things.

+1 remember if you mess up it may cost you 4k for rebuild. Take your time and do lots of reading.
