at least the Motec for RS is a complete replacement, and because the RS doesn't have ASC/ABS/AYC there arn't as many problems ...

That is why i said i do understand the replacement, if you want to have a major change in the drive train. Like ABS - AYC etc.
Other then that, i think just a waste of money. Or if you want to add extra option for the engine like ALS. But the M400 i do not think is a good choice to in that case since you are limited for 4 cylinder. So you cant controll the water injections etc which you could have with the M800, if im right. Anyway we never had the M400 that is why i asked why he picked that one. Im sure there is a good reason for that. But some reason my builders always picked the M800 over the anything in the past. And in the near future

2 ecu's are used a ton in applications like this. Its not asking for trouble. Lots of cars still retain the stock ecu for controlling the auto transmissions sometimes and drive by wire. Its not unheard of. Also you guys don't seem to see the limitations of a stock ecu from a drag racing standpoint as he does. He wants to be able to control everything and fine tune it for perfection. A standalone is the only way to go for that.

Let's say for example I want to log backpressure, and use it as a comp channel for ignition timing or fuel, or even use it to calculate the efficiency point of the engine for the main fuel table. Or say I want to set up a table that will drop the boost level or enable a rev limiter if the fuel pressure differential is too high. Those are only a few examples of thousands of different things you could do to tailor a tuneup to work with a specific application. It is this kind of flexibility and control that I like to have when tuning a high horsepower and or racing application.

I am not by any means recommending that people go buy a Motec ecu for their evo x that just has bolt on mods. In that case, yes it is overkill. Stock ecu will do just fine for 90% of the cars out there. But there are always going to be applications that will require that extra control and flexibility that standalone ecus can offer.
Quoted for truth.

There are die hard stock ECU people on this forum, and 95% of cars have the stock ECU, and it works fine for about 80% of applications.

Notice 80 does not equal 95

If it were my personal car, and I raced it, I would put a MoTeC in it too!

Any reason why you didn't want to use the plug-in box?

robevo, the M400 is virtually the same ecu as the M800 with 4 injector and ignition outputs instead of 8. There are still 8 auxilary outputs that you can use for nitrous, water/meth injection, boost control etc. They also have the same number of inputs. The reason I went with the M400 is because this engine is a 4 cylinder and I don't ever forsee a need to have an extra 4 injector outputs or coil outputs, especially with the big injectors available now I probably won't ever need to run 8 injectors. I ran an M600 on my supra. I don't think i'd ever buy an m800 unless I had a V8.

Chris, the plug in box only works with the RS model evo apparently. They are working on a version that will work 100% with the US spec GSR, but they can't give me an exact date that it will be ready, so I just went ahead and went with the M400.

Not sure if this was asked, but does the Motec control the MIVEC cams as well for both ext/int?

yeh i am sure it would... otherwise it'd be silly

anyways - normally you wait until you reach somethings limitation before replacing it..

i dont consider drag anything special in terms of requiring a motec.

circuit racing where you need proper telemetry/logging back to your team, then yes sure... but not 10seconds worth of strip

i'm still waiting for AMS to send me one of their 2.2's btw :P

Yes, the motec is controlling both cams.

Does the MOTEC change it over to Speed Density? If so, I would say YES 100% worth it.

But if Tephra does a SD conversion for the stock ECU like the 8/9's then I guess unless you are a professional racer as in like 1%, the stock ECU SD will make well over 1000whp as it has been demonstrated.

Whoops, yes, it definitely was still under development when you purchased an installed this thing. I wasn't thinking clearly about the time frame. They are almost 100% ready for GSR's. I have one working in conjunction with the stock diff controller.

He is probably going to reach the minitations quickly so why not upgrade the ecu now? He wanted to try and figure it out and see if he could make it work and he could. Why follow and do what everyone else does, so you can just blend in? Im sure 10 seconds worth of strip would be boring for him, doubt he'll keep this thing that slow He made a great plug n play kit for the Supra a while back and hopefully will be able to do something like that for this car. He's actually out there wanting to make more options for the Evo X people, so why not appreciate what he's doing and just wait to see what all he accomplishes with this car.

Believe me, we are all for people adding to the pool of knowledge and for making new products. Tephra is the Stock ECU guru and has made the stock ECU pretty much able to do whatever people need so this is why he is questioning it.

I'm pretty sure running 7-9's on stock ECU wouldn't be blending in...

stock ECU control has come along way since the days of yester-year.

it's no longer mandatory to run an aftermarket unit to be competitive...

Looks like a great option for those who need standalone options.. Im going to go on a limb and say not even close to 80% but 99% of Evo X owners wont need anything more than stock ecu.. Its already gotten that way on the 8/9.. The X is no different.. 1 in 100 seems about right.. Keep us informed Darin as I am interested to see how this project unfolds..

Seriously why is this a stock ecu vs. Motec conversation? He likes what he likes, he's not trying to sell anyone on it. He wanted a motec in his car just like he has in his past cars. What's the problem in that? A Motec is a great ecu, so there is nothing to be argued about it. Can't go wrong with a damn Motec people!
