Our system is an interceptor computer, which means there is no need to upload the tune into your factory ECU. Instead, our system installs inline with your factory computer, intercepting and altering a number of sensor signals before they reach the factory ECU. These signals are altered in a way to provide us with the desired outcome. It is the same system we use on BMWs, Porsches, and a number of other applications.

Will this (in theory) work on the MR?
We may need to make some changes to the mapping for the MR, because of the difference in transmissions, but other than that everything should work exactly the same. In other words, OE manufactures often change the mapping slightly from manual to automatic cars, which requires us to make slight changes in our map as well.

Sorry, let me rephrase. Say I wanted a tune (I'm in PA) Could I have a tune from you guys despite the distance? Or will this information be made available to all tuning shops? I've never heard about doing this, but is it possible to ship the ecu and have it tuned?

the Xede (or whatever they will call the black box microcontroller) they are using is, as shiv pointed out several times, an "interceptor" device that "plugs into" the ecu.

Thus distance won't be an issue, you will just be buying the micro-controller (when it's out and hopefully that's soon )

How safe is this tune? Making power in any car is easy. Making power reliably is a whole different story. Nice numbers, but safety first

Shiv, it has been a long time since we have talked. I wonder if Smoggy has been reading this thread.

Anyways, congratulations on the preliminary results. I am looking at buying an Evo X MR, yet there are rumors that the dual clutch transmission won't respond well to power upgrades. What do you think will happen with the MR and the extra horsepower that tuners such as yourself will throw at it.

One last question...I am wondering what platform will make more power. Is the Evo X far superior to the BMW 335i with basic bolt ons or are both engines about the same.

Thanks in advance,
GNULOOKS

From my experience owning a VW DSG, which is of similar design, the torque is the problem. From my understanding the Bosch ECU in the GTI/A3 retards ignition timing in low gears above certain loads to limit torque. Reliability is also a problem with the VR6 engine which is why the european R32 came with DSG but the R36 was a stick -- or so they say...

Who manufacturers the Evo SST?

Getrag builds the MR tranny. Getrag has a reputation for building very strong gearboxes when it comes to normal manuals. If they hold the same standard to this one the gears will be strong. The question is how much torque can the wet clutches hold. I would hope that 300lb/ft is not the limit...

The 335 does have a full 1-liter displacement advantage, so I don't think there's any comparison between the two in basic bolt-on guise. The BMW should have a much fatter torque curve.

BUT, good luck on upgrading the BMWs turbos! There's TONS of space on the X to upgrade the turbo.
