Stock clutch SUCKS!!! - rant
^^^^ It'll be at the expense of owners too. Why give someone a "clutch setup" good for 400 hp of 350+ ft/lbs? Just give them something adequate for stock power levels. It'll hold up fine if you drive it like a commuter vehicle. It'll burn the F'up if you launch it. They have to cut costs somewhere. This isnt 1990 anymore. The Gallant VR4 was a great car but it never held the icon status the Evo has now. Every youngin' and their friend wants to own and destroy the car now. Why should Mitsu pay for that? If you want to launch the car like a drag car, replace the clutch and eliminate the restrictor pill.
The way I see it, in the hands of someone like MalibuJack or other older owners, the stock clutch in any of these cars will exceed 100K miles under a mix of normal and spirited driving conditions. Launch them and they'll last < 10K miles. I don't expect Evo newbies to know or understand that. All I gotta say is search and anyone will see that this is a reoccurring theme with these cars. It's been an issue since their US beginning.
I say we're all lucky the Evo's ecu doesnt monitor the vehicle's diagnostics like the DME in BMWs.....

Guys,
As always, people are over reacting to simple comments. No I don't launch my car every day, once a week. or even once a month. No I don't plan on drag racing it. I take VERY good care of my cars.
It's amazing the number of people on this board that are taking the position of "just drive it like a commutter car and you'll be fine" This is so contrary to what the EVO is. It is not simply a Commuter car.
And if some of you guys sre driving your cars as a commuter cars..I have to wonder why you bought an EVO with the exception of a dedicated road race car.
It is suppossibly designed for "sporty", "spirited" driving and Mitsu taughts is "racing heritage". Ever rally race I've ever seen starts with a decent launch, so drag racing isn't the only place that launching is needed. You also might find yourself at a light in a lane thats going to end and you need to have "brisk" acceleration to get over to the other lane.
I think you guys are getting hung up on the word "launch". No I haven't taken any of my previous DSM or my X to redline and drop the clutch. Launching doesn't always mean drag racing.. In fact, I was simply trying to get a comparison pull with my G-timer meter to compare the results to the base pull, thats it.
I have read of many X owners complain of the clutch feel/smell, so it's obviously upsetting some regular x commuters as well.
And someone is right in saying that I am a newb when it comes to Evo's, that doesn't mean I don't have oodles of AWD Mitsu experience. If a mushy suck a$$ clutch is so common to Evo's, why is this thread so surprising to everyone, Why is everone trying to suggest it's my driving style? I expected something along the lines of "what the x too, pull the pill out and lets see what happens"
So bottom line, no I don't drag race it, don't plan to, drive very sedately most of the time and the clutch still SUCKS, get over it.

Again what/where do you race - curious if I know you?
Also, pardon my ignorance of the AWD world but what's a "DSM"?
Finally, please remove the CDV - if I had an Evo X I would do it myself but still waiting for my MR. If anybody near Atlanta has one and wants it done, call me. I'm just DAMN curious to see the difference. Yes the clutch could be of a better feel in my opinion. However, based on a good hard test ride I suspect it's NOT the smell culprit.

DSM's are the 90-99 Eclipse, Talon, Lasers.

I bought mine as a weekend, backroad, adreneline rush. Nothing more, nothing less. It may see the "real track" but I won't drive it any harder than I do currently on my favorite back roads. So to sum it up, the X seems to have a "clutch system" that is economical for commuting and nothing more. You have to modify that system to get more. Re-read your first post and then search slipping clutch as a "title of thread," and I promise you that you will see threads dating back to 2003 that start off similar to yours. I understand now that the problem is more common in the X. Seriously though, no hard feelings.

Thanks! I appreciate it...I am not trying to start a feud at all. just voicing my dis-pleasure. I will most likely be pulling the pill out today.
So all those waiting for someone to do it...It'll probably be today.

Let us know how it works out for you. I have thought about removing the pill from my X as well, but have been uncertain about it. Thanks for being a pioneer! Take pics of the install, er... removal rather. Just make sure to bleed the clutch line after! You don't want air bubbles in the system.

Took 45 minutes. I followed this guide:
http://evomoto.com/tech_info.php?tPa...5c77616b84523f
The X is exactly the same. One inportant thing to note is that it might not be neccessary to completely remove the slave cylinder from the vehicle. I did remove it, and then couldn't find the CDV. I then looked at my drip pan and sure enough it was there. So simply removing the banjo bolt completely might allow it to fall out. The CDV in the X is Plastic with a metal spring.
Impressions:
Keep in mind that I have only driven 10 minutes with it, but engagement is much more linear to me. I can now shift without any jerky movement.
I am going to start a new thread to post my impressions as time goes on. I will post the link to the new thread here.

Idiot's who can't read/comprehend.
Anyway link is here:

I am an idiot because you cannot launch the car at 5000rpm? Maybe your should stick to 2 wheel drive. Go ahead and pull the restrictor, I bet you will be one of the first complaining of Transfercase problems.
Hey guys,
No useful info here. I'm just pissed. My 16yr old Gvr4 with a stock clutch can launch better than the POS clutch. I am not sure if it's the clutch or the dam CDV (restriction pill)
I tried to launch on the factory 5000 rom stutter and slip the clucth quickly, Car went no where fast...within 2 sec's I let off and all I could smell was clutch...this blows..
Somebody please, please remove the CDV and tell me it gets better....I don't really want to remove the tranny on a car with less than 3000 miles on it. I will remove my CDV, but I want to get my tech manuals first!
And before anyone claims I'm killing my car... I drive very sedately most of the time. However even when I try to slip it just a little I smell Exedy bull****!!!
Sorry...gotta vent,
James

I have launch my VIII and IX over 40 times with the stock clutch and it was fine, on both cars. Both cars had bolt ons, so more power and torque then your stock X.
