Fuel dilution in oil problem
I too go by the 5k interval oil changes. I also change my oil filter everytime. I just checked my oil tonight and I am at 4k since my last oil change, the oil was spot on full and only had a pinch of black in it. I do however smell a hint of gas in it. I do like doing the 5k interval though because I have my tires rotated at the same time. I guess I could move it down to 4k oil and tire rotate and that would put me in the middle. I do not drive my car hard though and it is stock besides a "Works" drop in air filter. Not sure what to do. I am planning on keeping this car awhile so I dont want gas in my oil diluting it out and wearing my engine componants out.
I take back my above statement. After checking my oil more carefully it does smell of gas and the oil does not feel, I guess I would say "slick" to the touch. It feels watery. After feeling Mobile 1 from a friends car there is a world of differance from how his oil felt to mine. Mine felt like water with some oil and broke down quick on my fingers and his was much more thick and slick. Not sure what to do??? Do i take it to the dealer? I feel like they will blow me off.
I think we wait for the STI2EVO's results following testing of his oil. He to has not had a tune so should be running as rich as you so if his tests out to be fuel diluted, then I think you can bring this finding to the dealer with some credability. In the mean time, I would change my oil at more frequent intervals to provide some peace of mind.

Are you both running the same oil? Same viscosities (sp?)...
Oils Cheap, Engines aren't... If you can smell the fuel on the stick, I would believe you are over the 2% Maximum Fuel dilution allowed and would change your oil...
Others may disagree, but they don't have to pay for your engine.

Update: I am almost at 7k miles, which will put me at 2k on the current oil and then I'm sending it off for analysis. Since I smell fuel in the oil, I don't want to wait too long to change it, but I feel that any less than 2k miles on this oil wouldn't be enough time to get accurate results from the test. Once I get the results back, we can simply multiply the results by 1.5 to give a rough measurement of what the fuel content would have been at 3k miles. I will post up the results as soon as I get them.

I have a MR and my oil does turn dark after 1000 miles or so and I can smell the gas. I took it to the dealer and the master mechanic said the color is normal for turbo cars, but he could also smell the gas. He has put a call into Mitsubishi and will get back with me when he hears from them.
I just flashed to stage 1 AP ACN map. I will change the oil and see if having leaned out the tune will make a difference here.

i noticed a dark runny oil that smelled like fuel with my last oil change. it was the first time changing it on this car myself. i still have it sitting in the garage. i could send it in for analysis if only i knew where i could do that. any thoughts?
I like to know how you guys will get 2% when oil analisys results are meassure in PPM.
So I checked my oil today....and...
oil level is fine
but It smelled like gasoline big time....!!
this cant be normal right?
any insight on this interesting, possibly really bad find..?
thanks
