boost increase?

Hi guys,

First off I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I just want to be safe.

My first mod on my new X was a nisei upper intercooler pipe. I had some boost issues after the initial install but that was quickly taken care off by readjusting and retightening.

Shortly afterward I noticed during some hard pulls especially in 3 rd... My boost gauge was reading 21.5- 22 psi but not all the time...mostly just stays at 20 like normal and tapers off. I figured this was normal due to the increased air flow from the turbo to the intercooler.

So yesterday I installed my AEM cold air intake... Again with no issues. But on my first pull and consistently after that I'm now boosting at 23.5 to 24.5 psi. Again I'm almost positve this is normal, being that I know this happens with boosted vettes using different parts to attain more boost. But this isn't my dads car and I don't have gobs of money to throw at it if something goes wrong.

So if anyone out there in evo land can let me know what's the dealy with my car and if this is normal.... I would really appreciated it!!

Thanks, Don

Sounds all to familiar. Check out my thread here https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...y-no-tune.html

It is a good read and I soon found out that I needed a tune to make it "safe". Yours on the other hand does seem to be a bit lower and in the "safe" boost limits. But I would still suggest a tune.

thanks for the input.......

I was definitely planning on getting a tune, but i figured I would get a number of bolt ons taken care of before I did, as to not waste any money. Next on my list, which would happen really soon, would be a Megan cat back, as well as a down pipe, and possibly a high flow cat. After those items I was planning on taking a trip over to DG in LI. Are there any other bolt ons that you suggest I put on before a tune?

Thanks Again

Stock boost is set to peak at 22psi, and sometimes you'll get a quick spike to 23 if there's enough load on the engine. When you install parts that free up airflow, peak boost will usually increase slightly. You'll be just fine running 24-25psi.

My thoughts also........will be getting a tune very very soon. Planning on it right after a cat back and down pipe. Im hoping that i should be fine till then.

I like the buschur exhaust alot, it is perfect for the car IMO. I don't know on the numbers, I haven't been dyno'd yet. Just a OTS map for now and it has appeared to of fixed all my problems, no more 27 psi for me....

The AEM intake uses TRICK BOOST LINES in order to RAISE BOOST LEVELS to achieve their advertised gains.

In our opinion the intake has next to NOTHING FOR GAINS and the gains in performance are purely a results of ADDITIONAL BOOST from splitting the boost control solenoid lines and using much larger lines to suck away signal from the wastegate and raise boost.

^^^^So you saying that the AEM intake means nothing once tuned and I continue to increase in mods toward the 400 hp mark? I think not.......once tuned that is......

The AEM intake slows the air past the MAF and increases boost.

There is next to no benefit on an intake for the Evo X once tuned.

Our Evo X did 390whp/417tq on stock intake system.

his blew up because he used an MBC in addition to no tune. if you used the oem boost control, it will limit your boost appropriately when it senses danger. but to your credit, getting a tune is essential.

with the current mods i have, i make a consistent 23psi and tapers off to 21, without a tune. it's perfectly fine, knowing that the ecu is adjusting by dumping mad amounts of fuel into it until i get a tune.

think of it like this: any mods that will inhibit the ecu from controlling boost, you should get a tune asap.

My exhaust was about $200 in parts (piping, muffler, tips) and I welded it all together myself. I made it almost identical to the Buschur exhaust with quiet muffler. From what I can tell, it gave a nice gain in power and response and it sounds great, not too loud at all

I don't have a tune yet, but I'll be getting a Cobb AccessPort and a custom tune at Innovative Tuning in Buffalo.
