Accelerated onto expressway then extreme misfiring...
Jeff , it seems that some have issues with little mods and others seem to have great luck with the car even with bigger turbos. Overall I think that some of these cars do indeed have some sort of quality control issue which should NOT be mistaken for overall junk parts in the motor . Us for example it took us 27,00 miles and many many track runs as well as many times of running 40lbs + ( yes we have ) to melt the corners of the pistons . I guess now that we have so many shops opening up the motors we will start to get all the info we'll need to go forward with .
Best Regards
Frank

Due to new information, I have restored this thread.
I need to stress that you guys need to discuss this very carefully, and if there is vendor on vendor bashing, it will just be closed again and infractions will be given out.
Junction- Was the porcelain on the plug with the closed strap just dark from being rich, or was it also wet (oil)? Is it wet now? A wet plug with oil virtually guarantees piston or ring damage.
Since AMS says no detonation, I agree 100% and believe there is no det. I believe they are competent tuners! Warm&SCSI way off topic posts removed.
Thanks in advance for keeping this one on tech. Lets get to the bottom of this problem!

Really sounds like a quality control issue ... Not all the X's are having this problem. It is troubling because I hate to see people having to replace their engines/internals when they get blindsided by something like this. Hope you figure this thing out.

No news as of yet. I had an appointment with AMS for Friday to get flashed back to stock but just learned officially, from someone elses experience, that there is in fact a counter in the ECU when flashed outside of Mitsu. In turn it is a waste of time for me to put my car back to stock only to have my car taken apart at Mitsu and have them say VOID in hopes I will have them still do the work, which I wouldn't.
So as it stands today my car runs fine which I know can't last forever and I do have to address the issue. My only move seems to be bring it to AMS and have them pull the head to see what the object was bouncing around my engine and if it was in fact the piston decide where to go from there. Rather than a rebuild I am wondering if the piston indeed is cracked but there is no other damage then what are the chances of replacing that single piston and moving forward?
Being that my car has 20k on it this scenario is probably pretty risky and I would have to just do the rebuild with new internals
I seriously had a dream that AMS opened up my engine and found that the piston was cracked, no joke.
In an ideal world I could bring my car to Mitsu, show them my tune and discuss the fact that it is pretty safe/mild and there is likely a defect in the engine internals. We could all learn from the problem and I could get it covered with some newer parts which address this issue. Unfortunately tuning these cars and discussing it with Mitsu is like taboo.

So my situation, which I had a thread opened and then closed, is that I had the spark plug ground strap in one of the cylinders closed (#4). The piston looked "ok" with a borescope but is the damage really going to be that evident without pulling the head off? My guess is no.
I have spoken with someone else that had this same problem who has their car at Mitsu as we speak. Last fall they had the same problem I am having currently. Then after had to change his plugs 3 times before recently the car lost all compression in 1 cylinder and most in another. He had a problem with the car leaning out at wide open throttle. I am not sure if that is related.
Anyway I have to say that I was skeptical that this was the issue I was having but am pretty confident that it's dead on. My plan is to spend my Memorial Day Weekend pulling my mods off so that next week I can bring my car to Mitsu.
Mad_III you took your car to the dealer and they installed your own Ross Pistons and Manley Rods?? I wish I knew of a dealer near me that would do this.

flash it back to stock. Then take it in, what does it matter anyways, at least you made an effort and tried. You have a better chance of them not catching it if you go back to stock.
Let us know.
Dude your car is next to blow...
There is a kid here who experienced the exact same thing with the spark plug issue now his motor is toast
Look:https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ree-chime.html
Whats with these motors?!?!
I remember people bashing this one kid because he moded his car without a tune and that's why his motor blew...
BS I dont buy it here are 2 cars that blew with a tune and light mods! Ive seen almost 5 motors blow for no reason!
So whats the problem? Quality control at mitsu? Tune? or the mods?

Was your fuel tank less than 1/4? And were you turning? I guess what I'm trying to get at is that if you have low fuel and pulling latteral Gs, EVO Xs tend to misfire at top end. And it smells like leaking gasoline.
This happened to me at the track few times, so I always fill up every session.

There's nothing wrong with the motors but with an aggressive tune or poor tune it doesn't take much to cause all sorts of knock/pre-detonation and eventually engine damage.
They both were tuned by AMS...i would say they aren't poor tuners considering their 1200hp evo 8
