Boost solenoid problem

Today I had my car on the dyno and after 10 or so pulls the solenoids stopped functioning. We narrowed it down to either the ECU or the solenoids themselves.

mods on the car are

AGP FMIC
AGP Hardpipes
AGP CAI
Dynojet CMD

The car was running normal boost then on a back to back run both solenoids stopped funstioning and the car ran on wastegate. After about 20 minutes of sitting, the solenoids started functioning again for about 5 more runs.

Anyone got any ideas or questions that you would like me to answer to help you answer my question.

My question is: Does anyone have any idea why the solenoids would work and stop and come back on?.

little background on the CMD. It's a piggyback, right now its only monitoring the boost, we haven't added any boost to the car. They swapped to a new CMD to see if it had something to do with it, and it didn't change anything. The solenoids wouldn't function with or without the CMD plugged into them.

One last thing, if they programmed the CMD to take over boost cycle, the solenoids functioned for the one pull they tried that. We stopped after that b/c we all thought it might be something in the ECU now that was causing the solenoids to shut down.

FWIW my boost solenoid wiring is "sensitive" on my 8. I plugged in a SAFC-II harness and after a day or so I was at wastegate boost. Removed the harness and eventually was fine again. You may just have some wiring being pulled or tweaked.

I dunno what that CMD is but if you take it off and then are fine again, I would think you are having the same loose-but-not-really-loose wiring issue that I did.

It took a Mitsu dealer 3 full days to pinpoint my problem prior to the SAFC harness experiment. If yours is just failing when the car gets really hot...maybe a connection is losening or something.

We did think that maybe some wiring was loose, but it corrected itself on its own while the car sat for 15-20 minutes. That led us to think it might be heat related so we turned the fans off and ran a few times to build the IAT's back up where they were when the solenoids failed. It ran several more times at full boost both with and without the CMD connected to the boost solenoids.

I had the CMD on the car for almost 2 weeks and the solenoids never shut off. The CMD currently is only monitoring the solenoid duty cycles. there has been nothing actually done to the values.

ok since noone has any ideas, lots of looks though... here is a new question...

What would cause the ECU to kill the boost solenoids and not throw any ecu code at all.

over boost? maf readings? afrs? Knock? While I'm pretty sure all three of these throw codes, what wouldn't throw any codes at all but turn the solenoids off completely.

I have a very simiar problem with my evo x...no code, no nothing. The car is running at wastegate pressure...10-12 psi. I perform the leak test and there is no leak at all. The dealer could not figure out the problem. There is no mod on the car, just a boost gauge to monitor...I will replace the 2 selenoid tomorrow. Hope it will fix the problem.

Ive got an EBC greddy profec b spec 2 and one day out of the blue it wouldn't let me boost.
I swapped the solenoid out for a friends while troubleshooting and it worked.
He decided to try mine on his car and it worked fine. Twitchy thing the solenoid is.

I got your PM and I haven't fixed mine. its completely random for me as to when the solenoids go off and when they come back on. no codes and nothing stored in the ecu either.

let us know what happens when you replace the solenoid

have you tried switching a boost solenoid from another x? just to test it out. because if you have faulty wiring it will probably pull a code or something...maybe it's a faulty boost solenoid?

Ok so yesterday I replaced one of the 2 solenoid (the brown one) and it did not fix the problem. I should get the other one today. I will let you guys know if it make any diffence...I did another boost leak test but could not find anything. I also tested the connection going to the solenoid and I'm getting 12v on both. It does not mean the duty cycle is ok but at least I have power going there. If anyone of you have any idea please let us know.

man, that is a long wait. i'm waiting for your results before i take my car in here. lol Gets annoying drive on WG rpessure.

for thsoe that are going to pipe in... I'd rather know i have a shot with replacing the solenoids on my own, than taking the hard pipes off and taking the car to the dealership.
