Ordered my differential pins! Dan/Nick have been great so far in regards to service and helpful advice.

Not looking forward to getting these put in though .

I wouldn't recommend changing the final drive at all. Buschur did on their Evo X and they said it sucked horribly.

If you really want to fix the problem, treat the car like a honda and rev the **** outta it.

Build the motor and go 9k+...works for me.

Well, he said to either stick with a stock frame and do the final, or stick with the stock final for a bigger turbo

I'd say it really depends on what "stock frame" you do. I know with my FPred even, I think more revs would've been helpful. I'd say the Black is a blurry line though for a new final drive or more revs. The short gearing helps build boost quickly, but you need the revs, its basically that simple.

So, I think that I might have the diff. pin issues, but I am not sure. Pretty much, my symptoms are a sound like coins or a really light weight metal being shaken around in a metal can. It only happens at really low rpms, pretty much if I am going slow and am in a relatively high gear. Other then that, as soon as I get in the right gear, it acts fine, and I only hear it from time to time for a quick second when I am shifting. Any thoughts? I hope I am just psyching my self out.

I know this is kind of off the wall, but would driving on a near flat (like 10-15lbs) tire damage the differential?

I did some research into it and it is claimed that Mitsu used a different "adhesive coating" for the diff pins for 2011+. Some argue they put in stronger pins as well.
I've also read threads where they claim this was also fixed in the 2010 version (wasn't mentioned if this was the adhesive or stronger pins though).

Now onto the interesting part:
Jacks Transmission stated that the issue wasn't cause by bad adhesive or pins, but rather not enough tranny fluid reaching the gears due to a design flaw in the transmission.
The above said is what is causing the pins to pop out.

What would be the point of welding your differential pins together or just upgrading the pins if the fluid issue is still there and directly wearing your fork and synchros on 3-4?

I'm not convinced that Mitsubishi did anything other than use a different adhesive to hold the pins for a slightly longer period of time. In the end, the final result is still inevitable.
And unless they re-designed the tranny for more fluid flow, this isn't a solution at all since we still aren't getting enough lubrication. Sure the pin popping out is fixed, but what about the wear from no lube? NO LUBE!

Food for thought eh?

I just wish we could get a 110% soultion to this issue already, I feel each shop has their own way of fixing it and the reasoning behind the issue...I went with shep and so far so good but we shall see...

can we get a summary of what this thread is saying. i read the whole thing and people are writing a lot of mis information about what ultimately leads to the tranny failure. Is it launching and tracking it, or is it modding it past what it can take. if i guy an unmoved can i bang around it without out having to worry about tranny failure?

Another diff pin failure

Had my diff pins fail on the highway and lost all the trannny oil last night and I had no idea until I lost fifth gear completely while on cruise control, I just had a new clutch (normal wear and tear) and master cylinder upgradedone via the recall. Shifted to fourth not sure what was going on then lost4th, pulled into the slowest lane to avoid an accident, shifted to first gearand all four tires completely locked up nose diving the car. This could have turned out very bad at speed and it’s at the dealer now. 2008 evo X 69K spirited driving but nothing out ofthe ordinary. I am not happy to say the least, waiting to hear back from Mitsunow.

Holy, that sucks man. Wasnt there a recall or something for 2008s that addresses this? I know that the diff pins have been much improved in later model years.
Keep us up to date.

Is there confirmation on which years that Mitsu "revised" the pin design or coating? I am looking to purchase a Evo X 2011+ and just getting informed what I am getting into.

I am not going to drag or heavy launch the car which doesn't interest me....I do plan to participate in some NASA events in the car though.

From what I am understanding...I may have to upgrade to the Shep pins eventually, but looking to leave the car stock somewhat stock for a year while I gather up $$$ to do one massive upgrade session on the Evo X.
