smoke from turbo/T-case area

Wednesday I was coming home from work and while stopped I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I pull over and while its not a lot of smoke, there's still enough to concern me. I get home and look under the car and see what appears to be oil, but it doesn't smell like burning motor oil. After this discovery, I figured it may have been t-case fluid spewing from the vent.

Yesterday I find the time to get under the car and drain the excess fluid from the factory overfill issue. I was surprised and how much actually came out! Afterwards, I take the car on a 5-minute drive. No strange noises or anything. However, I get almost back the house and the ASC OFF light comes on. I was even going around a corner or anything, just cruising @ 45mph. I get home and pop the hood to see more fluid.

What are the chances this is just excess fluid blowing out the vent? What would make the ASC OFF light come on randomly?

I'm at 38k with enough mods to where it'd be voided if i went in, however I may not have a choice in this instance.

Thanks for the help guys!

Completely drain and refill your transfer case and hope to hell permanent damage hasn't been done. Avoid driving the car until you do this, replacing the transfer case isn't cheap and the more you drive it the better chances of it being damaged. Luckily I got mine covered under warranty.

Thanks to your thread I knew to check for the factory overfill. I ordered amsoil last week and it hasnt made it to me yet. I'll do a drain fill when it comes in and report back.

The weird part is that I noticed no noise or te car acting different prior to this.

Find some fluid locally to use in the meantime then. Some Mobil 1 75W-90 from Walmart will be similar to the Amsoil you ordered so you can run that for the time being, or just go to the dealership and get the correct DiaQueen 90W LSD. I honestly wouldn't drive the car as-is just in case; big risk to take on a $3k part.

I saw smoke coming out of my hood scoop at a redlight a month after i bought my car. I stopped and popped the hood and it looked like it was coming from the downpipe. I took it to the dealership and a o-ring blew out on the transfer case. The wind from under neath the car blew the oil up onto my downpipe. The dealership fixed it for free since it only had 2k miles on it with no mods. They had to replace the entire transfer case cover since they can not buy just that o-ring. My car was their 3rd car they fixed this issue on.

I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow, and I THINK this is what happened to mine since I havent heard any noise. I just hope warranty covers it....

When I called to make an appt, they didnt ask if I had mods so thats a plus. Also, did the yrevise the t-case so this wont continue to happen? Or was this based on the factory overfill issue?

This is just a factory fluid overfill issue, not an actual mechanical issue.

Mine was NOT a overfill issue. They must have installed the o-ring or did something wrong from the factory. I am not sure what they did wrong, but i have not heard of any other issues after the installation of a new t case o-ring.

What I believe Kracka is saying is that because of the overfill, it caused more pressure which caused the o-ring to give way.

Well, I took it to the dealer this morning. I hadn't heard anything by lunch so I just called them. Turns out there are 2 gaskets where the t-case meets to the tranny, which are both leaking. She told me that they're going to call the engineers in Cali to see if there is a way to fix it without replacing the whole t-case, but if there's not, then I get a whole new one. I'll know when she calls back. She also said that if it weren't covered under warranty, it'd be $4100, which is ludacris for 2 gaskets.

This is great news! I didnt have to de-mod or anything. Thank God for a mod-friendly dealer.
