Guidance on modification decision

So I picked up my 2012 Evo MR a week and a half ago. After talking to Top Speed here in Atlanta, I feel it is about time for a initial round of modifications. My goal is for a safely tuned and comfortable DD. That'll mean I won't be putting another muffler on it.

This is what I spoke to them about, let me know what you fellas think. Typical intake, grimmspeed ECBS, cobb DP and maybe a catted test pipe... and a tune of course.

I like to hear the spool and only want to spend cash on things that will give decent chunks of performance. Marginal mods aren't in my scope right now.

Thoughts?

Pick up an Upper intercooler pipe at the same time, and if I'm not mistaken, a cat-back + a high flow cat will net you better gains than doing the DP, and is marginally more expensive.

I'm not a fan of loud exhaust though. Is there a viable option for a catback that is marginally louder if at all than factory?

Matt, there are plenty of options. Check out the exhaust thread in this subforum.

Like stated above....there are plenty of exhausts out there that are quiet/comparable to stock if you search and find one to your liking. It will be more beneficial to you than keeping the stocker on there. I guess it will come down really to what you want and your cash flow. Since you’re getting the DP and TP might as well go TB.

I am now leaning towards just a intake, UICP, and a tune until I can find an exhaust that I like. They can sound so different on videos and I'm sort of particular about it, so I'll simply wait.

Here is what you need....

Perrin catback exhaust - barely louder than stock but flows much better. If you didn't tell anyone, they would think it was stock.
Catted test pipe/test pipe
Upper Intercooler pipe
K&N drop-in filter - no need for a full intake at this point. You may want to pick up a Perrin intake tube if you wish.
Tune

There you have it. The best bang for your buck mods. Should net you about 80whp over stock, and will still drive, sound, and feel like a stock car.

MAgnaflow Catback is also another option for you as it is very quiet.

I have a Drop in k&N for sale.. PM me if you need it.

I would also vote for the Perrin catback. It is louder than stock under acceleration, but is very tame when cruising. Mine is paired with a test pipe and isn't that loud so if you went with a catted tp or a HFC it would quiet it down more. As for bang for the buck, that EBC combined with a quality tune will be the best money spent. I agree with the others that the gains for the exhaust are more in the tp/catback than the dp on the X.

Yesterday I dropped some coin on an ETS intake, UICP, and grimmspeed EBCS. I feel this will be a good start. In the six months to a year I'll grab a turbo back.

Is it fine to drive with an intake and UICP without a tune? I'll be installing them before I head to the tuner and will hook up the EBCS when I get up there.
