Is a Downpipe Worth it?

My buddy has a UR 02 housing dp that I could pick up cheap from him and was wondering if its even worth picking it up. I have read some places that it nets a positive gains not just hp but response and spool but then Ive read that it actually hurts spool up and doesnt net any gains at all. Just wondering what some of your opinions were. I am running the stock td05 and dp right now and in the near future Ill probably be upgragin fuel pump, injectors and running e85. I probably will upgrade the turbo too but not this year. Thanks for any input.

All about budget vs goals. If you're looking to squeeze every ounce of power out, or upgrade your turbo...then yea get a downpipe. If you're looking to just throw a few boltons on, make good power then from what i've seen in gains it's not worth the cost/install.

Gains are gains, but for $350+ and 9hp...sure doesn't seam worth it to me. The companies making the downpipes claim more gains, but they are tuning the car after the install. The tune is worth 90% of the gains...NOT the pipe.

My above chart included a retune for an actual true before and after comparison. The car was tuned, downpipe installed, then retuned all in a matter of hours.

O2 elim downpipes are worth it for the guys upgrading the turbo or trying to max out the stock turbo. If you're looking to just do some simple bolt-ons and not take the setup too far then a standard 3" replacement downpipe will be fine.

Thanks for the responses. The only reason I was thinking about doing it was my buddies gonna give it to me cheap so the gains versus $$ should be worth it. Ive read one post from forever ago saying that there were really no gains from dp on bushurs dyno. No gains vs $ wouldnt be worth it lol.

Lol should have done it when swap was done. Would have required way less cursing. When I did mine, I felt the spool came on a lil sooner, didn't notice much in hp gains. I have seen some posts about the UR do breaking at the welds.

Yeah I know I wish I had it when I did the swap. Any of the noncasted dps have a chance of breaking at the welds. Ive seen the MAP 02 dp break at the welds too. I went ahead and bought it off him so Ill be putting it on soon.

For my part, I ask my friend to make me a custom 3inch downpipe when we change the clutch. It cost me aroud 60$ and no time since the downpipe was already out of the car for the clutch change.

So if you are not in a hurry to place it depending of your project, this is the best time to do the downpipe upgrade.

Im gonna do it I have it sitting in my garage now. Is it gonna make any difference without having a retune when I install it. If not Im just gonna wait to put it on until I upgrade injectors fuel pump and switch to e85.

No retune should be fine.
