Evo X MR questions
Well let me say this first, I'm a complete noob when it comes to evos. I'm currently leaving the life of lifting and driving big trucks. But my question is about the evo Mr with the twin clutch automatic. I recently found an 08 with 13,000 miles and its bone stock at
a low price. I'm just looking for some fresh reviews on this transmission and car in general. I have heard good and bad about the transmission. I plan on doing mainly bolt on performance parts. What do you guys think of the transmission? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks and again, sorry for being a complete noob!

Overall I dont mind the SS-T trans. It's pretty versatile, in that you can switch shifting modes from "normal", to "sport", to "s-sport" with each mode making it shift harder, and faster as you get higher into the modes.
The thing that sold me, was that I really wanted a 6 speed, thinking Id have a nice highway gear (6th) for cruising. Although, I later learned that 6th gear is still revving close to 3000rpm much over 100kmh.
Some things you should consider before buying it, would be that they seem to be a weak link when you start adding engine mods. Even on a stock motor, the clutches tend to slip a tad during shifting at full throttle. They also seem to have a little "quirk" that drives me nuts. Every so often a shift will be delayed around .5 - 1 second before it decides to shift. (only noticeable in manual mode) The rest of the shifts are pretty damn fast, as long as you're in sport or s-sport mode. Even after being around for over 6yrs, dealers STILL wont crack them open to fix anything that goes wrong with them. They will only replace the entire unit at 13K + labor...
If I could go back, Id probably get the 5 speed manual.

I've only had mine for a year, but I love the SST. I've only driven three pedal cars for the past 20 years or so. I guess I had a couple of automatics for 2 or 3 years during that, but the majority was manual. It was alway the faster way to get the car down the road. Reading about dual clutch autos and how good they were getting, I was interested. I think it really is the best of both worlds. Day to day, it's a pleasure to just throw it in D and sludge through traffic, or whatever is thrown my way. From my readings as I make decisions for some bolt ons, is that the weakness is with the stock clutches when the torque gets around 350 to the wheels. So depending on your power goals, and what you want to do with the car, I think it's the best option out there for an all arounder.
I've had 2 Evo Xs, a '11 GSR and an '08 MR. The SST was by far the better transmission for me. On the track, I'd take the SST all day long. Some foglight deletes, maybe an additional cooler, and you'll do just fine at the track.
For me, going from the SST back to the manual made the car feel antique, even though it was newer.
There were many updates from 08 to 11, especially around the SST. HUD, diff pins, timing chain, exhaust, texture wrapped wheel. IMO, it's worth trying to get an '11 or newer.
