Evo X- S2 Cam requirements

Got some gsc s2 cams and been reading about shims and buckets but I honestly have no idea what this means. Whats required to install S2 cams and valve springs on an evo X? Are they drop ins?

The GSC S2 require upgraded valve springs.

Springs can be done one of two ways: Taking the head off or use a spring compressor to do it with the head on the car.

My best advise is to take the car to a shop who has the knowledge and ability to properly do the work.

My car is currently at AMS Performance getting the same exact work done.

Thanks. Called GSC and since im gonna only make little over 500whp, ill be fine just dropping them in. When you start getting in the 800+ he was saying that's typically when people start in with the shims.

I would still suggest you get a set of valve springs. You'll regret it down the road.

Not exactly, but your already spending that much doing cams and springs, what's another $120 to not have to not have to worry about stretching them and to rev it up higher

You should be fine with the clearances within +-.002 but If you have your head off anyways I would definitely do headstuds, normal headgasket and check the valve seats for dings or excess carbon since that's gonna rob your limits on power. My head had a lot of dings on the seats so I had a machine shop cut the seats and back cut the valves which threw out the tappet (shim bucket) clearances. I bought all new buckets from Mopar since they are the same as the Caliber SRT4 2.4

How hard is cam install on the 4b11's? I've installed cams on my evo 8 and it was pretty straight forward.. Is it much harder on the x's???
And what would be a fair price to get them installed, with valve springs?

A lot of people just slap cams in and get away with it. Not saying it doesn't work, but you should really check the tappet to cam lobe clearance and make sure it is in spec. Since the 4b11t valves are not adjustable, its not as easy as say with a Honda motor. What you need to do is install the cams and torque down the caps to spec. Then with a feeler gauge and following the procedure in the factory service manual, check all the tappet to lobe clearance. Write down each measurement and make sure you organize it so you know which measurement is for what tappet. If they are in spec you are done. Chances are they will not be. So what you need to do is look at all your tappets, and write down what size is stamped on the underside. Then do the math and calculate what size tappet you need to get the clearance in spec. Mitsubishi sells the tappets in something like 40 sizes. I have the master list somewhere if you need it. The tappets are only something like $10-12 a piece so it seams silly not to do it right. Most Evos I've come across that just had cams put in had more valvetrain noise that I like.

Also, upgrading the valve springs and doing head studs is always a good idea with a bigger cam swap. I have a low mileage set of GSC power springs and retainers as well as a ARP head stud kit laying around if you need them
