Did I just bend my valves?

My '08 was running like crap and the check engine light came on...took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it with the dreaded stretched timing chain. They wanted $3000 to fix it. I shopped around and found a local shop that would do it for $1650, so I decided to go with them.

Once I got the home from the dealership I didn't drive the car at all. So my car sat parked at my house for over a week while I found the shop and they ordered the parts. This morning I started it up to drive to the shop and it immediately made a nasty rattling noise. For about 20 seconds I sat there thinking "what is that?" then I realized the chain might have skipped a tooth and I shut it down.

So, do you guys think I bent my valve(s)? Would it even continue to run if I did, or would it have died immediately?

It's probably fine as far as the valves are concerned. However, I would get it towed to the shop. Engines that make abnormal noises should not be driven.

It's going back to the shop today...hopefully they can figure it out, but I'm not getting any error codes when I plug in my OBDII port reader and it seems to be running fine so I have no clue what's going on.

Yeah I'd like to know what you're suppose to check or reset with that warning.

The shop checked it out and everything looks good. They said the warning is for a worn timing chain, but obviously it's a false alarms since they just replaced. They were able to clear it using their computer and it hasn't come back (yet). I really hope its not some messed up sensor and it keeps returning.

Edit: Warning is back on...back to the shop

You need to take it to the dealership or someone who can do the timing chain reset using a MUT. Just resetting the code won't fix it. It will come back again. FYI

High end diagnostic computers can reset it like Snap-on MODIS. They likely just forgot to.

You are correct...Dealer is going to take care of it Wednesday and my shop is going to reimburse me for the cost since this should've been included in the first place. The only problem is the dealership is a 45 minute drive away so I have to waste a couple hours in the middle of the day.

timing chain elongation reset must be performed as already mentioned. It requires a special tool. The shop you took it to probably has the right tool, they just probably don't know how to find the feature.

Dealershi pcan do it. Or if you have a tactrix cable you can paypal Tephra 25 bucks and he'll send you a program to do it yourself. It'll take you all of 5 minutes to download the program, plug in the laptop, and press "timing chain elongation reset". And voila. On the plus side, when your ACD/AYC eventually needs to be bled, The timing chain reset tool tephra has also comes with the ACD/AYC pump bleeding tool.
