Unhappy First Car

Ive had my permit for a year now and i am starting to look at cars. I want a sporty all wheel drive car with stick. Im thinking of the Evo X, i have saved up enough for it, but is it too fast for a first car?

Unless something has changed, the Evo X is not a true "stick." Good luck and try not to be the first "I wrecked the Evo X" thread. Find an Eclipse GSX or a Subaru WRX, not STI, then build up to the Evo. Experience on EvoM shows that you are doomed to buy an Evo with no driving experience (one year permit + Evo = bad news), but its your life and you may be the exception.

Yes it is. I'm not putting you down or criticizing your age or lack of driving experience but having a 295 HP car as your first isn't a good idea unless you have very rich parents who can write off each and every potential accident\mistake you have with it. Probably wise to get a stock WRX (not an STI) and take it to local track events to help you hone your driving skills. We've seen several posts on EvoM of kids getting Evos (or some other high HP car) for their first and not soon there after wrecking it or causing a very big accident. Start of with something manageable and go from there. Aside from a potential accident, buying an X could potentially put a big dent on your virgin credit history if you fail to make payments and the car gets repoed.

Honestly I don't think a EVO X is a good first car for you, you just lack experience driving to fully appreciate what you are driving. I think a much better first experience for you, if you must have a turbo car would be a WRX (I can't believe I just typed that), or a Mazdaspeed 3, or even a GTI. From there you move on to an EVO. Just my opinion.

don't get a nice car as your first car. get something used, that you won't cry over after it gets destroyed.

when you get older if you're still interested in cars, you can get something nice and you will appreciate it, having owned a used car as you were younger.

overall, cars are a waste of money. unless you already own a house and have the extra income to burn, they're just toys for adults.

evo x is too ambitious for a first car. i also got my permit for about half a year, and i was ambitious like you and decided i wanted a 350z. i went for 2 test drives, and it was WAY too fast for me to be my first car. now i have a 08 GTS lancer. even so, its still sometimes a bit too much for me as a first car i think. if you havent driven that much and dont have too much road experience, an evo X is suicidal.

if you have the $$ for an evo X, save it. buy a less powerful car (and one that you dont mind getting scratched / bumped as it is likely you will probably put a few blemishes) and get the evo X after a year or so. This is what im planning on doing, drive this GTS lancer for a year and trade it in next summer for the X or a 350z

My 1st car was a 3000GT VR4 back in 91. I just sold it last year along with my S2000.

It doesn't matter what kind of car you have as long as you drive safe. EVo X with the 4 wheel drive is far better than a RWD car like a Mustang (which all my friends in high school drove).

Plus, if you wreack it the insurance will pay for it and you can buy another one. I totaled my CLK and then got a E500 with the insurance money.

^ Great advice from everyone. Evo X is probably one of the worst first cars for the same reason that its such a wonderful car to so many people. S-AWC will be incredibly confidence inspiring and thats why kids stack them up so much, they dont have a respect for the limits of the car because the car feels like it has no limits.

Get something cheaper, a lancer, a wrx, 2.5rs, mazda3 (not mazdaspeed3) or something like that. Something fun that handles nicely, isn't all that fast, and doesn't cost much. If you want to race at all take it to a track a few times and learn to drive in that. A year down the road pick up an evo X and you'll be a much better driver because of your experience in a car that doesn't make everything easy on you.

I agree with the 'as long as you drive safe part' but I definitely DO NOT agree with the 'the insurance will pay for it part'. You're one of the reasons my insurance premium goes up
