warranty changing for 2008 evo!!
can you believe mitsu is lowering warranty on new evo? ridiculous, my evo ix used will have a better warranty. 3yr 36000 mile basic, 5yr 60000 powertrain. don't believe me? just go to mitsu's website and click on specs.
i'm really not surprised about this. Mitsubishi is taking a bath (PR wise and cost wise) by people going out and beating the **** out of their cars and then trying to get the warranty honored. Especially with a car as complex at the Evo X will be, this could be interesting.
I personally don't blame Mitsubishi for this; people have been trying to defraud them since the Evo came over back in 2003, (how many threads do you see people say de-mod and take it back to the dealer). I do hope that the company as a whole uses this shorter warranty to not quibble with people about some legitimate claims. As always YMMV.

The way to deal with warranty fraud is through improving detection, and if necessary increasing the cost of the vehicle to compensate (after all, warranty is just another kind of insurance). Lowering the terms of the stated warranty coverage risks alienating not just the people who would defraud Mitsubishi, but the many people who just want a reliable car and some kind of assurance that it will last a while.
Personally I think it has nothing to do with warranty fraud. It has always been trivial to detect modified vehicles, and it always will be. There is simply no way to put a car back to stock without there being many telltale signs of the previous modifications.
