Evo X vs STi on next week's Top Gear
.02 mostly came down to the crappy start. STI has a much better to 60 time since it is a manual than the MR does. STI is sub 5 sec and I havent see an article where the 300hp MR version is below 5 secs. The GSR probably would have had a better time since it was just one lap from a standing start. GSRs times are anywhere from 4.6-4.9 secs to 60 so there is your .02hundreths of a sec. Now I do think if it would have been a couple laps the EVO would have been up by close to .5secs, since it bascially had to make that much up on the start alone.
Its sad that they showed the FQ the whole time, then did not run it.
Looks like they are getting 2.5 liter Subies now like we are.
If that is how the MR really launches (and I'm sure it is), that is pretty sad.

The Biggest reason I didnt get the MR was the 5.4 sec plus to 60 time. Hell my Volvo S60R make it to 60 in 5.4 secs. I like the car to have a little drag capabilities, and the MR launches like a dog. For me cost had nothing to do with not getting the MR. I do think I will probably be slower than someone in an MR around a track though with multiple laps with the same power output.
It did look like a slow start. In reality you have to do the track several times to tell. Reproducibility is the name of the game, gentelmen! N = 1 does not cut the mustard in any kind of serious measurement.
Yeah, the start did look pretty pokey. Though from what I've read, there's not a whole lot to screw up launching the MR so it probably does just launch slowly to protect the internals. A single lap from a stop with cars as evenly matched as the Evo and STI clearly favors the STI, at least when using an MR trim Evo. Still, the MR made most of that time back up.
What I thought was interesting was that the Evo was called complex, even when compared with the STI. One traction control on/off button, and another button that switches between the same 3 modes as the last Evo is complex?
Anyway, fun to watch.

LoL the STI completely gets owned everywhere else but here. I think stig needs a bit more alone time with the X, it is a different car to take around the track and the driver has to really get used to the S-AWC. To me Top Gear = Jeremy Clarkson...and he spit on the STI the entire time haha. To many variables for stig though, for example...was the ASC on or off? was the S-AWC on or off? How long has stig driven the car? Is it reflashed #1 or #2 or is it running rich? could be bogging on stig.
I have to say though that while I didn't hate the show I didn't like it as much the 8 vs 03 STI movie. It was more about just showing off the awesomeness of both cars and showing them on great roads with great music, but this was just the bashing of the STI pretty much for 15 minutes with an ending of a driver who doesn't know how to drive the X. He mentioned so little about the looks of the X even.

Too many variables for The Stig?
Please. The dude is one of the best there is. The reason he did that well with the STI is because he drove it at its utter limit. The Stig could drive in reverse and beat Clarkson around a track.

The MR is around .6 to .8 sec slower to 60 than the STi and to the 1/4....that means the MR MADE up close to a second in actual track running.
All this means is that if they were doing F1 starts they need to rethink the clutch...nascar/IRL starts...or races more than a lap long, you want the EVO X.

. He droves both cars to the best of his ability. Which was better in the STI.
Of course, who knows how many times they run that whole drill before taking the final timing run. That could have been his 10th try for all we know.
It's certainly an interesting result, and they didn't even bother to try to analyze why the entire program was spent discussing how much better the Evo was, only to find the lapping showed the opposite. I wish they would have.
I think the STI is the easier car to jump in and drive quickly. Many of the reviews I've read have mentioned that every lap they've taken in the X gets quicker as they get used to how the computer controls the attitude of the rear of the car. Understeer is easy and predictable, which is why most cars veer in that direction.
Oh and thank god his Gas pedal didn't break off lol
