i had an idea today to fabricate something to fit the oem wheel to an aftermarket spacer.

I was about the bring this one back up. I was looking into designing some type of extension for the steering column and even discussed the project with a machine shop. During the initial discussion, the shop said they had the tools to cut splines and gave me a reasonable (still $$$) quote on what a one- or two-off design would cost to manufacture. I had some time recently to start on the project again, but last week when I inquired about the same shop's being able to cut splines the answer was "no," and "I'll try to find a place." So I'm trying to find a place again that can do the work. And in the meantime I need to take a closer look at the steering wheel and column to see what exactly is possible (with the factory steering wheel and ctrls.)

Anyone know of a vendor or other company that's considered coming up with a solution for the steering wheel position? That would ideal of course. Has anyone approached a vendor about this?

Are you a big guy?
These seats are design by size, meaning that if you are more than 220 pounds you will need another seat or adapt a little bit your body. when the width of your body is larger than the seat your as... can't reach the back of the seat so, your knees are "floating", then you go a little back with your seat to feel more comfortable, but then you steering wheel is too far away.

on your left you can see the model evo3 from sparco for 46 "
on your right the regular sport 32" size

maybe i should get seats, but the wife wouldn't be too happy with me spending more money on my car. the stock seats are pretty nice. ill get a better idea of the seat on the 15th, going to a bbq with other evo x owners and one of em has one of those seats.

I have a similar problem. I had an Evo 9 MR, and the seating position was PERFECT! In my X GSR, I can't find my place in it. If I scoot close enough for me to be comfortable for my steering wheel and shifter, my knees are arched up practically hitting the steering wheel, preventing me from being able to rotate the steering without having to reposition my hands more often because they can't go past my knees.

Either I need a wider seat that will let me arch my legs around the steering wheel, which would be detrimental for holding me in while cornering, or I need a steering wheel spacer too.

This is the first car I have ever had this problem in.

P.S. I wish the A and B pillers were half their width. The visibility is so limited that I feel like I am driving a bread pannel van sometimes.

^ Yup, that about sums it up for me. All we need is telescoping wheels and this would be a non-issue.

If the '11's have that i'll trade it for that alone lol

like many others, i face the same issue: too close and my legs are too bent, too far and i cant reach the steering wheel.

aside from a telescoping steering wheel, have you guys tried sitting a little more upright? it didn't quite solve the whole issue for me but it did help just a wee bit.

After 5 months of driving around my car, I've found the perfect position. The trick is to adjust the seat to the point where your feet reach the pedals comfortably. Then adjust the tilt of the seat to the steering wheel. Then adjust steering wheel height.

I feel like I sit more straight up, but after getting used to it, I'm more comfortable, and the seat hugs me better. I also don't look like a gangster driving a ricer with my seat kicked back to the back seat.

The only thing I don't like is that the headrest seems to be a tad too far forward, and sometimes I want my head to kick back a tiny bit without hitting the headrest. Otherwise, I'm golden.

Yeah, almost to the point of being past vertical. The only thing that finally made the position tolerable was to install spacers under the front seat bolts, which raised my legs and let me move the seat farther forward. Of course, coupled with the upright seatback it can give the impression that the car is trying to fold me in half.

Plus now the steering wheel blocks my view of the turn signals. For some reason the turn signals don't always disengage after a turn and I've driven miles at a time before realizing they were still on.

It's almost enough to make me wish I'd bought an STI....almost.

Same problem here. If legs are ok, then steering wheel is too far. And I've already the backrest almost vertical, I always drive in this way.
I don't know why there's not a telescopic steering wheel on this car: also cheap cars now have it

You should be given an sti just for that comment..

Maybe an aftermarket seat will help.

And the turn signal thing pisses me off, why can't they make them louder and disengage quickly.

I would retrofit my car if they ever came out with a telescopic wheel.

We have GOT to figure this out. I test drove a X the other day and probably am going to end up buying it, but can't deal with the driving position. When seated your forearms should be making about a 90 degree angle with your upper arms, it's a matter of the couple your body can create about the axis of the spline that relates to how much control you have over the car. With your arms straightened out the speed you can make a correction and then the subsequent recovery (return to center) is really poor.

I'm thinking we could either use the momo or bell hub and then machine a reverse adapter to attach to this. Extending wires for wheel controls and airbag connectors would certainly be worth the effort. It would be important to use the same type of strand for the airbag connectors or else the signal transfer speed could be effected... not a big deal though.

Another option would be to actually bring the spline itself further outwards by cutting the column between the wheel and steering rack and adding some length and a helicopter joint or similar.

I really can't believe that this hasn't been fixed by now... not even in the 2010 lancers/ra/evo.

Lets put our heads together and come up with something!

Well I'm getting the car on Saturday... if I do the audio control bluetooth swap eventually I'll really have to take a good look at this.
