Evo X Steering Wheel Hub Extender
Keep us posted if you come up with anything.
Not going to work for everyone. I'm always playing around with my seat position and I've found that having the seat back at or close to upright tends to squish the *****.
Just move the seat forward and straight the back up!
The seats are great, but the steering column is just too short unless you're built like a chimp or have small *****. Really, it doesn't matter whether the seat is vertical. I'm in for a custom spacer!
Bump.
Did anyone ninja a solution yet? I'm 6' tall, same problem. The seating position is ridiculous unless you're 5' 9" or shorter. As 5' 11" is the average height for males in the United States there has to be a notable market for a piece like this. No warranty expressed or implied, for off-road use only, etc...
And cranking the seat back forward to make up for the wheel placement is really not ideal, though if you're just the right size it may work. The seat isn't engineered to support the human frame properly at those angles, hence the messed up lower back if you've tried this solution. Until I find a real method for fixing this, I've had to give up on holding the steering wheel properly... I steer with the bottom of the steering wheel. For my size it mitigates the issue enough that I can have the seat supporting my lower back. Still not ideal, but it's passable.
Regardless, this is a huge oversight and I'm pretty disappointed. My Evo VIII had no such issue.
So, to resurrect this a bit, how much would you guys pay for a fix on this? If someone is going to have to make something, wishful thinking won't pay for a damn thing. They'll have to have an idea of how much people are willing to put down.
For me, $400 is what I'd pay for a real solution -- maybe a touch more. What about the rest of you? If we get enough people committed, like in a group buy, we might be able to actually pull something off.
Cheers

I've started a conversation with a machine shop; I have no idea what will come of it at this point, but I'll keep this thread posted with any updates. I'm pursuing this until there's an answer of either, "Install Pics", "Too Damn Expensive" or "Impossible." I didn't buy this car to spend my time in it constantly readjusting myself and being grumpy or uncomfortable.
I'll start compiling a list of forum names who are committed to a real solution if it's in the $400-$500 USD range. Of course we'll get this as affordable as possible, but only post your name if you'd pay up to that range. If you aren't comfortable with that amount, put how much you are comfortable with -- just realize we're talking a complete custom engineered piece. I have no idea on estimated cost at this point.
Names?

i live in yelm, WA. this is my biggest complaint about the car, its so damn uncomfortable, one of the most important things needed to be fast in a car. i'm a track junkie unlike many. i talked to speedware in redmond about and they said they'd need my car for 2 weeks. i'd gladly pay that or more. i wanna keep my stock steering wheel and paddle shifters. i should ask a user thats on a forum thats just for the evo x, no 8 and 9 owners whining about how heavy it is or how the aluminum engine is ****. let me know what you come up with
Update: the first local machine shop I contacted doesn't do this kind of work, but they referred me to a couple other contacts they have in the industry that might be able to help. I have a GSR, so whichever shop I work with won't have an SST setup on hand for reference -- but I'll see what can be done to accommodate the flappy-paddles. Could someone post some close up pics of the paddles, from the backside of the steering wheel? I don't have a frame of reference for how the paddles are integrated. Perhaps paddle extension is also possible.
I'll also contact speedware in Redmond a call and see what process they were looking at to get this done for bradze. More to come.
Cheers

Dear Speedware,
I'm a new Mitsubishi Evo X owner, and as it turns out the driving position is setup for short to medium height drivers. I'm 6' tall and simply cannot find a comfortable position, that also places me in proper seating position for all vehicles controls. After researching on Evolution X forums, I discovered this is a HUGE complaint among Evo drivers across the country, as well as in Europe.
The clear solution is to extend the steering wheel hub toward the driver about 2-3"so that pedal, seat angle, and steering wheel are all properly aligned.
After scouring the internet, there is simply no current aftermarket solution that retains the factory steering wheel -- which is what all the Evo guys want (myself included). We don't want to lose our wheel mounted Airbag, traction and cruise controls.
A fellow Evo X forum user mentioned he had discussed this issue with speedware in the past, but that you would need the car "for two weeks."
I'm writing to continue the conversation he began, as I can live without my car for a two week period so that something like this could become a reality. Also, if my project/install were used as a prototype so that the parts could be replicated and sent around the country/Europe we'd make a ton of Evo X drivers ecstatic.
Let me know if you can help. Thank your time.
Cheers
