Engine shut off while driving

On the way to work this morning, I was rolling up to a red light in neutral when I noticed the battery light turned on and the RPMs dropped to 0. I stopped at the light and restarted the car, and it was fine since then.

I've had the AMS UICP and intake installed for a week and haven't had any problems. I also have the 2nd dealer reflash. I've seen other threads about the car shutting off while driving due to the horrible idle, so I'm thinking this just might be related to that. I figure I'll unplug the battery in a little while when I get a chance.

Other than that, does anyone have a suggestion as to what may have happened?

do you have the intake shield on your filter? i know people are having problems running open element filters with the AC on causing rough idle

I also have the AMS intake and ic pipes and the same exact thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I had no idea what happened. It just totally died as I was about to stomp on some moron in a eclipse.

I did hear about the idle problems with the open element filter, but completely forgot about that...that's most likely the cause. I'll have to look into a shield or something. Thanks for the info.

No you don't NEED one (ran same for over a month and no problems) but if obtained you will have more whp.

Later, Ken
AMS intake & single exhaust
Iveytune (322 all around)

Reviving this thread with an update. On the way to work this morning, the same thing happened again and I was able to figure out when it happens.

When I am cruising in 5th gear on the highway and I push the clutch to the floor, the RPMs drop to 1000, then rise a little bit, then fall to 750, then jump a bit, fall to 500, then to 250, and then to 0. Once the RPMs hit 0, the engine is obviously off, the battery light turns on, and I lose power steering, etc. As soon as I lift my foot off of the clutch, the RPMs kick up again and the car operates as normal. WEIRD.

I don't want to bring it to the dealer, as I have a few mods installed and I doubt they would have a fix anyway. I'm assuming it's the open element filter problem discussed earlier in this thread. Thankfully, this doesn't happen during normal driving, and I would never really put the car in neutral on the highway to cause this to happen again anyway. It only occurs at 60mph+, because I tried to replicate the problem at lower speeds and the idle simple sits at ~1k when cruising in neutral below 60.

Just thought I'd share this wackiness.

It's your intake... This is a common problem with evos when you get an intake. Even with a tune it can still do it when being driven hot.

I repeat IT IS YOUR INTAKE. I'd take it back to Ivey and have them retune it, or replace the intake. I guarantee it doesn't do it with the stock intake.

I figured it was the intake. I can live with it until I get a tune so I'll be alright.

To clarify, the car is NOT tuned, so that's probably the issue here - I plan to have it tuned by Ivey. I don't want anyone to think I had it tuned and this problem is occurring!

Even when you get it tuned you still might get it once in a while. I still get it out of every 1 in 20 stops... but I noticed it's only when I'm driving it HOT. So when I'm driving it hot and am coming to a stop, I have learned to rev it a tad. Hope that helps.

it's a common problem with any car with an intake to do that. happened in my old turbo 325 and my old is300. both running open element filters. can't explain it, but it didn't happen all the time.
