I left my seat loose and felt it after a hard drive, honestly it was still cold to the touch but then again it's 30 F here now so you southern state owners will have to persue this. Maybe the combination of 90 F outside temps, 120 F cabin temps, and a hot exhaust are enough heat to cause the foam and tar to "melt together" somehow after a hard drive and parking it on hot blacktop.

I think mine will be fine with the DEI Cool Tape covering that area of the foam but there is no way I can check for hot temps around these parts til next summer.

After all these recalls, tsb's and now this I'm really considering a 335xi. I'm just about fed up with my $40k Mitsu. I really, really wanted to love the car but it seems like i have nothing but problems with it. Hopefully after I get all these things fixed I can start to enjoy it but for right now it's just a PITA
You've never owned a Range Rover. Mitsus arent very probablematic at all. I'm still satisfied. Although, a 135 was my other option, but even those are going to have problems, of a more expensive nature eventually.

Given that these are street legal rally cars, I expected a few issues here and there. I've owned WRX and STi, and they werent really any better, in fact the WRX had a lot of issues. Hell, even a Ferrari needs a valve job every 10k miles...

Damn guys, fire up the email, and start getting these concerns to Mitsu. This is way to much heat transfer way to close to the fuel tank for me! How are you guys not worried that your stock exhaust car is burning through the floor boards next to your fuel tank! That **** is scray as hell! Even if it;s just a little.

Guys this has nothing to do with the exhaust. The exhaust does not even come near this area. There are dozens of other places on the car that the exhaust would affect before this one.

If you notice in the pictures, this seems to be happening where there is a body plug with some sealer smeared over it. Then the sound deadening is adhered over top the body plug and sealer, but the sound deadening does not cover the plug on the driver side. It appears to me that there seems to be some kind of chemical reaction burn going on here.

I just checked our white X and it has a small amount. It is a very early 2008 car, probably the first one in the area. I also checked my Ralliart and there is no signs of this happening yet.

Is this possibly an issue with ambient temperatures? It would be interesting to see how this is happening regionally.

Sorry, its been crazy at work this week. I am going to try this today hopefully. I never remove the back seat before. Where are the bolts to remove the seat?

I agree. I don't know exactly what it can do, but I'm more and more convinced that it's NOT the exhaust.

The rear seat bottom has no bolts. You grab the front base of the seat around the center of the seating area and yank up. It has a plastic clip in the body of the car that holds a metal u-bracket on the seat.

has anyone with a burnt seat base actually gone under the car yet to see what it looks like underneath?. i know that undercoating can be quite flameable if there is undercoating , but the paint should be burnt off under the car at that point. if the paint is not burnt off then something else is happening here.

I looked under the white car and saw nothing but clean white paint.

Foam can melt/burn at a much lower temperature before the paint ever would.

I told them, but they all started calling Mitsubishi asking for a recall, never even looking to see what was under that location (The Gas Tank) Idiots

Yeah I'm thinking chemical reaction that may be accelerated with heat and/or pressure possibly. The spot in question is indeed right over a body plug as well. I very highly doubt the exhaust heat is getting up to that area at this point.

I still think it looks like the insulation is just transfering off from just normal heat... very weird that some people are reporting it being really hot. When you put a new exhaust on there is a burning smell you will experience from the metal going through heat cycles that will eventually go away.
