Notchy shifter or grinding...is this normal?

First off, grinding when going into reverse...took the car into the dealer to be looked at and they said this is normal for Mitsubishi's. The thing was, I was not at a 100% complete stop and it will grind going into reverse even though the clutch is disengaged. This did not happen on any of my other 5 speed cars. Camaro, MR2, 240sx, Mustang, Accord...but with this if I am barely going forward and try to put it into reverse, it will grind. Does this happen with anyone else?

Also to go hand in hand with the transmission subject, when I shift, it is notchy. It doesnt take a lot of force to get into gear but it isnt very smooth. When going into 5th gear, sometimes it will go fine and sometimes it will be sketchy. I dont know if its normal to be notchy or not...anyone have experience with this?

The tranny fluid was changed at the dealership. It was overdue, so I had them change so if anything is wrong with the tranny, they will have to fix it seeing as maintanence was done. The clutch and flywheel are stock.

From what I understand the reverse gear has no syncho's, so you'd need to be at a complete stop in order to shift into reverse without it grinding.

Yeap, this is common place for the X... Every Mitsubishi I've owned/driven except my TSi have notchy transmissions. They also seem to be prone to colder weather as well, have a syncro smashing good time my friend!!!

There's no dedicated reverse gear, the transmission actually uses 1st and 3rd gear to reverse. There's plenty of topics on this if you search.

My 1g TSi AWD did not grind...never had any other car do it either. Not until this car, but good to know that it is common and supposed to do it.

What about being notchy? I put in shifter bushings and skate bearings for my Talon and it made the shifts really firm, but not notchy like this. And my 5th gear is kind of sketchy like I said...doesnt grind but sometimes it will go into gear fine and sometimes it wont go in so I have to try again and then it will go.

That's the way it is. Mine does the same if I don't shift with authority. You gotta experiment and figure it out. In cold weather it's is way more noticeable but it gets better once warm.

I've found rowing through the gears while I am parked seems to really help out in the cold weather, maybe you can try that; otherwise, pretty notchy.

<----- I have a 2010 GSR, just haven't updated the sig.

As others have said, yes this is common. The "official" notchy transmission thread is here: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...on-thread.html

Please divert subsequent discussion there.
