Rev Hang and Notchy Trans.

Hello all

Have a 2010 Evo GSR (5 Speed) that is completely stock. No mods, no tune.

Thing is, I occasionally get rev hang in the car. Usually it is at pretty low revs (2k-3k)

The other day I was pulling up to the pump when I pushed in the clutch to coast in. The revs hung at about 2k. This has happened a couple other times also.

Car has almost 5k on it.

I am going to take it in to get my second oil change/tire rotation in a couple weeks and have them check it out but wanted to see if this was something common.

My second issue is that my gearbox is notchy. I mean really notchy. The occasional grind into reverse. And now, the occasional 2-3 shift gives me a bit of a grind.

This is not during hard driving or acceleration, but rather normal driving/shifting.

Now before I get the posts that suggest that I cannot drive stick, allow me to say that I have been driving manual transmission cars for the better part of 15 years.

I appreciate any help. I dont mind that the EVO is a little rough around the edges, I just want to know if its something I can fix.

Thanks.

For the transmission notchiness, I did the fluid change, underhood/shifter base bushings, and put in a TWM short shifter. I did them one at a time just to see the results. The shifter helped 2-3 more than anything else. The underhood bushings helped 1-2 some. Did the fluid change last and didn't really see any difference. I still get occasional problems 1-2, but really only when shifting below 4000 rpm (its my DD, so that happens often). Never had a problem at the track. I've also been driving manual for >20 years and the Evo tranmission is the most "notchy" I have owned - still love the car, though.

I agree. I have the shifter base and underhood shifter cable bushings, and still notice notchiness from 1-2 when shifting under 3.5k (especially when cold).

Use the factory fluids in the drive train. There is no reason to do change them. I never had a problem with drive train and I Always use oem for the drive train.

Check the FAQ sticky up top. Both topics have been covered a lot, and there are helpful threads on these topics. Good luck!

mine had this issue from 1-2, not 2-3 (2-3 has always been smooth). My car has around 9000 miles on it and I can say that the problem went away for me - perhaps things just needed to be broken in.

Also, experiment with the timing of your shift, how you hold the knob.... these are factors that made things smoother for me. It helps to do the shift in 2 quick parts (old gear to neutral, and neutral to new gear). Once you get the feel of things it makes it easier.

I really only have a problem when shifting from 2-3 and only at low RPM. Anything over 3500 and it shifts nice and smooth.

I find that if you want it to shift smoothly below 3500 you have to delay your shift a half sec.... Take it out of second and hold the shifter up to third gate but don't push it in to engage the gear just hold it there for a split second before you push it in. Then it should go in smoothly.

Works for me.
