GT-R owner considering switch to Evo X MR
With the MR it would be harder simply because people not being sure of the tranny... if you could live with a 5 speed GSR you could just buy some leather MR seats (since you were concerned about the GSR's cheaper seats) and be into the 11's like the GT-R (I think it runs 11.2 or so?) with maybe 5-6 thousand? Maybe less if you do the work yourself. I could be wrong there though... you can always go to the 1/4 time thread and see what times guys are running with what sort of set ups.
To get the power to where you need: cams, turbo, full turbo-back exhaust (as opposed to cat-back), front mount IC, intake. An exhaust manifold would help also. And the necessary fuel system upgrades (pump, injectors, etc).
Suspension/handling: wider wheels/tires, sticky tires, a high quality coil-over system (KW V3s at the minimum in my opinion).
Brakes: upgraded brake pads, some brake cooling would help.
Now, the GSR 5-speed will have no problems. The MR SST tranny is questionable. Off the bat, you need a transmission cooler. As for all these guys saying it can handle more torque than rated, sure it can! But for how long?!
For an analogy, I believe F1 engines had to double their mileage before rebuild intervals. To make the new endurance limit, they had to drop the max revs from over 20k rpms to ~18k rpms. Sure, even the modern ones can spin 20k rpms, it just seriously cuts down on the life of the engine.
It's funny this thread came up. I recently met a GTR owner who sold his car and bought a X MR. Reason? It cost waaaaaaaaaay too much to mod the GTR. A Nismo exhaust is like $18k. Turbo upgrades? A lot.... and he's getting significantly better gas mileage in the Evo, so a side benefit.
if you guys talk about cost savings in street hp then you should by an american . Because what you going to do when you run into him? and his car probably cost a same or even less then yours

To get an 11.2 in the quarter you are looking at at least 10k in only power mods assuming you don't do your own work. You could probably get it down to 6-7k with doing your own work, on a GSR, an MR will require a lot more for tranny upgrades.
This is also assuming race fuel or e85. Like I said on the first page (i think) keep the GT-R, it will be hard to match that performance. However you can match it with an overbore kit like the AMS 2.2L one with an FPred on E85 and light weight components, then you will really have a beast. And it will be cheaper to maintain then the GTR and cheaper overall.

Forget the GS-R you cant go from a GT-R to that. Cheaper interior and the ride is way to stiff, hit a pot hole and it rattles bones. The old school 5 speed will drone on the hwy with an exhaust. Its a great car for younger people or guys that don't drive much , "but like school on Saturday NO Class"
the best solution it seems for you is just get a ix mr if your concerned about those issues, as the ix mr will be very fast, handle great, good quality and not overheat like the x with the dual clutch, also it will be cheaper to modify
As someone who has a Modded Evo and has two friends with GTR's(One Stock, One Cobb tune) I can tell you that its not easy to beat a GTR, even with the lighter Evo IX. The Stock GTR runs 11.6-11.7 and the one with the Cobb tune runs 11.3-11.4. If you want to match the GTR on pump and street tires your gonna need Full-bolt on's and a turbo upgrade, i'd say in the neighborhood of 12-13K which includes labor and tuning. If I add up my mods right now I can see I spent around 10K on power, suspension, drivetrain mods alone.
I don't know what the GTR owner did to his at the track days I was at last summer in STL, but the poor thing only lasted through a little more than one day before the oil pressure dropped precipitously and the thing shut itself down to keep the engine from seizing. Driving my Evo, pretty stock, without his problems gave me more confidence that the Evo GSR is KISS and worth more by having less to break.
Not that I'd turn down the GTR
Awesome car; but like the 2008 X's, it'll have its share of design issues being a totally new car.
I like the posters who suggest that the dough for a GTR would indeed make one really bad Evo with mods, and spares/operating costs still in pocket.
