GT-R owner considering switch to Evo X MR
Nissan has the best paint of all the Japanese automakers. Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Mazda are all near the bottom as the worst due to the crappy water based paints they use compared to the rest of the world. Domestic and German paint is much, much durable than the paint on most Japanese cars. I bought my 05 Neon SRT-4 nearly the same time as a colleague that bought a new TSX. Within two years I had probably less than ten rock chips of any size while his front end looked like it was shot peened. My wifes 2002 Mazda Protege 5 developed really big rock chips on the front end and had rust bubbles on the hatch three years from new. Paint is one of the biggest complaint from Toyota owners.
I agree it's not cheap, however, we are talking about an EVO X "MR", how is it easy? Has anyone including shops hit that yet? And the MR for the X model has been out for 2+ years now.....
If I were the OP, I'd keep the GT-R if I can still afford the monthly payments. Then buy a used 03-04 Evo8 for $12K-$14K, mod it to be a track or drag beast (whatever his fancy is)... then just purely DD & baby his stock GT-R =)
So, IIRC, the MR SST has a rated torque capacity of 375 lb/ft at the crank. The Evo is rated at 300 lb/ft I think? Puts down around 250wtq on a dynojet. Assuming that ratio stays constant, a safe limit for the tranmission is 312.5 wtq on a dynojet. If you maintain that torque and rev out to 7500rpms, that 446whp. If you take it up to 8k, 476whp.
That SHOULD be enough to crack mid-11s, also assuming the tranny limit tables in the ECU can be altered enough. With the GSR 5-speed, it would be cake, assuming you had a lot of money
I wouldn't take any chances with an MR tranny, look at the GTR tranny they cost 20K and they still break...5 Speed(GSR) is the way to go if you want to go fast, the MR is more for light mods and cruising IMO.
It's possible to make the MR as fast as a GTR, but to do it reliably... I dunno man.
As a GTR owner, I'm sure you're aware of the high cost of, well.. everything with that car. Really, the only thing you need to worry about breaking is the one thing that people have been calling in to question: the SST.
I had a friend who was a service writer for mitsu when these cars and the SST came out. As I understand it, there are very few mechanics that can even crack open on of those trannys. Generally, any problem with the SST and the unit had to be removed, sent off to mitsu for servicing or replacement.
The horror stories you hear about mitsu and their warranty fulfillment are no joke. If you mod the car, and your SST breaks, *you wiil be holding the bag, and it's not cheap.*
The cars aren't in the same class and thats the real problem. Any time they are compared, Evo fans cry "unfair advantage." Any time the Evo comes close, it's hailed as a budget gtr. Its not, and never will be. Thats why it costs half as much.
