You sure the sound is coming from the coil-over? I had a clunking sound coming from the front suspension, and could have sworn it was strut-related. As it turned out, it was caused by the front strut tower brace not being tight enough at the center bracket. I cranked the two bolts down, and the noise disappeared. You may want to make sure the two bolts holding the brace at the center bracket are really tight.

my guess is you didn't perform the pre-tensioning of your coilover springs. before you put your coilovers on you are supposed to adjust the top nut that compresses the spring. It's supposed to be about 1.5CM compressed after it just touches the spring itself. Otherwise when you "max out positively" the coilover spring rattles around because nothing is compressing it. If it "maxes out positively" and the pretension is done, the max it will go is to the 1.5CM compression and it won't rattle around.

chances are, somewhere along the line, you didn't tighten one of the bolts tight enough. you have to go back and walk yourself through the entire breakdown and reassembly. you dont have to take everything apart, just do a once over checking everything. I mean, if it's only when coming to a stop or neutral it might even be the lugs on the wheels. The transfer of motion could cause the clunking during movement and stopping and not during driving. I'd check your wheel lugs first since you obviously have to before getting to the coilover.

check your:
sway bar
top hats
strut bots
wheel bearings

just because the noise has gone away it doesn't mean the problem isn't there.
