Safe?

Is it safe to run a harness bar, 4 pt. harnesses and an aftermarket steering wheel w/ no airbag on a street car? Ive seen other people with no problems, but want to make sure. Harnesses seem safer than airbag anyways. If not, what setups are safe for a street car and what constitutes overall safety if the airbag equipped wheel is taken out?

Well it depends on your interpretation of SAFE. If you roll the car are you less likely to be thrown from it with harnesses yes, but if you get rear ended you could break your neck. I think it would be funny to see someone driving on the street with harnesses, helmet, and hans device lol. I have been thinking about getting the quick release just for and anti theft reason, but have wondered about not having the airbag anyone running this on a DD?

What's your definition of safe? It's "safe" to a certain degree, but then again the evos crash test rating is terrible. You won't get thrown from the car but if something does happen it will be harder to get out of the harness (a fire happens or whatever)

okay thanks. How would I break my neck if I were rear ended also? and ya, quick release was also a thought of mine, I have to park it in some neighborhoods where car theft is not an uncommon thing and if they dont have the wheel, they dont have the car!

If they want it, they'll take it. You can take all 4 wheels off and the steering one too...

Just get proper insurance. Trying to prevent car theft is like trying to prevent rain. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be.

Exactly, but he meant let's say your sitting at a red lght and someone rear ends you going idk let's say 45-50 mph and since the 4 point harness is gong to hold you against the seat the force could cause you to break your neck. IMO.

never, ever, ever wear a harness on the street. Track only. The joy of the rally 4 harness is that you can keep your seatbelt as well, so use the harness on the track, the 3 point on the street.

Really... I mean really. I googled up crash test ratings for the 2010 Lancer ES and it gets nothing but 4 and 5 stars for front, side, rear, and passenger.

I will have to agree that it's not "Safe" to drive with a 4-point in daily traffic. I mean your standard First responders aren't really expecting you to have one. And those lost minutes figuring out what you are wearing might be important at times

also more likely to get squished if you roll a car without a roll cage while wearing a 4 point harness.

and to the op, no, a harness bar on its own won't cut it; the 4 point is designed to keep you in that seat. If there's no give to the position of your body and the car rolls without a cage, your body gives instead.
