? Regarding "Test Pipe"

Hello All. My question is this: Whenever an Evo X has a test pipe installed, weather it be a complete aftermarket exhaust or just a bolt in on the stock exhaust, is there a pipe that replaces the test pipe that is "catted"?
I hope this makes sense.
Thank You,
Dean

A test pipe replaces a Catalytic converter. You can get a resonated test pipe to reduce raspyness, but you are still braking a federal law, and voiding your warranty by replacing it.

I run a PA dealership and we have to have a cat. I bought an 08 X from a guy last year and it had both pipes, a test pipe and another pipe, with a cat, that fit right into where the test pipe was. I have gotten other Evo's with test pipes and I am trying to verify if there is always a pipe available with a cat to go in it's place?

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.

Let me try to explain what I am asking.

Whenever there is a test pipe on a car, is there also an accommodating pipe to replace it, but with a cat?

There's either gonna be a test pipe installed or a catalytic converter installed (or perhaps a "high-flow" catalytic convter). If an owner sells you his car with only the test pipe installed, he may or may not have kept the original cat.. I'm guessing most people would, but it's hard to say.

If for some reason the original owner sold or threw away their original catalytic converter, I'm guessing that as a dealership, it would be your responsibility to either say no to the purchase or to order and install the missing factory cat to replace the test pipe before sale.

No offense intended, but running a dealership, how do you not know about stuff like this??

No offense taken. I understand everything you are saying. But I don't believe a"stock" cat "bolts in" where the test pipe would come out. We have put high flow cats on all the evo's or STi's we have sold that didn't have them. I am sure that some of them we sold could have simply had the test pipe taken out and a replacement pipe, with a cat, bolt right in without any other modifications to the system.

It should, and vice-versa.. at least with the stock exhaust system and most aftermarket systems. Though, I imagine it's possible you could run into a custom exhaust, like a straight pipe setup or something odd, that wouldn't accept a direct bolt-in cat or test pipe at all. Can't think of any aftermarket Evo X exhausts that would be like that.. but anything's possible.

sounds like you're looking to switch from a test pipe to a cat... for you. seems like you got your question answered, but if not I'd be happy to clarify further.

Thanks again! We were a Chrysler Jeep store that lost our franchise last June during their bankruptcy. We have switched to just selling pre-owned I am learning alot about the Evo's and STi's. I wasn't aware that the stock exhaust would accept a test pipe as a direct bolt in. That makes life simple for us.
You have been a big help. Thanks again for enlightening me.

Kind Regards,
Dean

You are right! We can't inspect and car without a cat so replacing a test pipe with a catted pipe or the stock pipe works. Thanks for you input.

Welcome to the toys. The warrantees cover "Cat back exhaust", and there are nice stainless steel bolt on, never replace or worry about, systems out there that can be done in ANY guy's/girl's garage or driveway. That's not just an Evo thang, the STI crowd also has done this a while too. "BOLT ONS" means just that, no welding or cutting required.

And now you know, yes, the Cat unit itself can be replaced with a "test pipe" that drops right into that spot in the system. It's illegal and voids mfr warranty.

(Sorry dudes! He's already trolled your sig with a web-bot spider, hiding it in a link ain't gonna help, he'll turn us into a staff though of 2 ppl for the whole world of Evo warrantee voiders)

We have only ran into 1 or 2 units with a "custom" exhaust the we had to cut a high flow cat into. Didn't look good under the car but it was the only way to get it to pass inspection and emissions. Too expensive to replace the whole exhaust system.
Thanks again for all the input.
