Oil change 5w30 or 10w30 for the Evo X
yea, same here. i'm only approaching 2K miles, but i do a lot of cold starts and only occasional long (500mile+) runs, so i'm anxious to replace the Mobil1 5W30 with 0W30. Picked up a 5qt container of Mobil1 at walmart for $24, and ordered the oem filters (6 for about $40) -- so maybe next Saturday if it's nice.
Just recently had my oil changed at the dealer and they put in 10W30 Mobil 1. It has been ridiculously hot and humid in PA this summer so I'm sure it doesn't hurt.
My question is, would running 5W30 September to May and 10W30 from June to August be a bad move or should I stick with 5W30 year-round?

The thing is with oil its like asking about politics, religion or whatever everyone has a preference. Here is the deal. In my manual for my 12' GSR it states ONLY 5w30 FOR ALL TEMPS. Now if you want to choose what's best for your car then experiment on your own and by chance something does happen on your stock evo we'll I am sure Mits would love to deny your warranty claim. Now if your car is modified and out of warranty than who cares right? 5w30 M1 was factory fill for a reason. Sure we all can argue about it and make acusations. But the thing is, that oil meets mits requirements. They test car with that oil, goes through all the car journalists pounding on tracks and drag strips and tests with zero failures that I know of. So why make it dificult for yourself? Put in what they put in. If you race the car and have a built motor than ask the engine builder what he/she recommends.
Just my 10 cents.

Yeah agree with jeff,
Of course if you are tracking your car all the time definitely alittle higher weight is a good idea
But whats more important than weight of the oil is changing your oil as recommended ! other than that lets not get too **** with all the weights ..... I got about 18 ship engines (ranging from 200hp to 2000hp each) my 10 mechanics maintaining them (even though its not cars) ... whats more important is just changing your oil ... the weight 5 or 10 wont really make that much of difference ... oh and sometimes they run 24 hours and only stop to change oil and then run again.

oil brand
Kracka I have a question to ask you since I also live here in texas we're temps can reach 110 or more I can even cook an egg on my hood if I got hungry haha , is 10w- 30 OK to run in my evo I just have bolt ons nothing major if so what brand should I use because I'm starting to dislike Mobil 1 keeps coming out darker than tar at the minimum 3000 mile range, and Royal purple is just too expensive for me . my first time on the forums

As it should....I used amsoil,Mobil1 an now i been using eneos for the past year if it's not black then means it's not cleaning your engine!!......And i would just stick to 5w 30 on a stock turbo...
I agree with Jeff but he is not pointing out that's it's particularly the same thing for companies. They choose the oil based on several things like fuel consumption, protection, viscosity, etc. So they can sometimes choose an oil that might be a little less protective because it has better fuel economy because of easier flow. So I agree 5w-30 is the recommended oil and for most everyone its probably the perfect oil for people in the US. But thats not to say there aren't better protecting or better weight oil that might have worse mpg's but add better additives and longer engine expectancy due to better protection. I have been doing a lot of research on oil, and I don't think it will really matter all that much. I go mobil1 0w-40 b/c its used on all porsches, gt-r, vw turbo's, audi's, etc.
-Plus mobil1 tends to shear down to a lower weight, so a 5w-30 will eventually act as a high 5w-20w after time.

Just to be clear Mobil 1 makes 0w-40 for German cars.....But actually 5w-40 is used in those cars.....I have a lot of Volkswagen an Audi friends and it says use 5w-40....They use Liqui Moly which is made in Germany and It's actually one the best oil company's out there.
