Throttle Body Assembly Burned Out??
Throttle Body Assembly Burned Out??
I've been having issues with my car for awhile. Whenever I'd go more than 50% throttle, I'd start having bad hesitation, then it would choke like I hit the rev limiter. Driving around normally, the car is just fine.
In reading through the forums, it sounded like the problems people were having with the fuel pump relay. I replaced that and still had the problem. I got the code read, and it had to do with the MAF, so I read the forums some more and saw that people were having some issues with the MAF after they cleaned their aftermarket intake. Still had the issue. Finally decided to take it to the dealer to see what they said, but they wouldn't do anything until I put the stock intake back on it. Took it back this morning, and did a road test, same result. They told me it was due to the MAF (which I already knew), so I told them the MAF was brand new. They tried with another MAF and again the same result. After checking the car out further, they said the throttle body assembly was burned out due to my aftermarket intake. Has anyone had this issue??
I just don't feel like being ripped off by these guys.

Just some observations.
Search for "burnt out throttle body assembly" on Google and this is the ONLY relevant search result. I don't think your evo just invented a new automotive issue. I think your Evo has a hard-to-diagnose problem, and the most likely fixes DID NOT work, so the dealership is going to rush to place the blame on a modification. I would bet that after they replace your throttle body and the problem isn't fixed, they will start blaming your intake for some other far-flung issue.
Take it to a mechanic who knows their stuff (check yelp if you don't know a lot of people in your area.
A friend of mine had similar issues with his IX MR. After checking the ECU, MAF, and turbo seals, he eventually found out the problem was a clogged cat.
Best of luck, keep us posted.

Have you had a tune done? You shouldn't really be running an aftermarket intake until you have had a tune. It causes the car to actually run richer after a while which would result in more carbon build up in the engine.

Also, if it was a clogged cat you would be throwing a code. I had that issue when it was under warranty and they had to replace it twice (catalytic warm up issue).
My questions if you're not throwing codes are:
When did you last change your plugs? Are they gapped correctly?
What gasoline are you running?
Does it get any better after performing Seafoam or any other fuel system treatment?
Have you checked all your vacuum lines for leaks/cracks/corrosion?
Are all your injectors and injector connectors seated firmly?
Always start with the low cost issues first and work your way through the list until it's the big elephant fix...never assume it's the most expensive repair first. Once you've eliminated all of these, I would check your FPR and go from there. Also, it would be a good idea to invest in ecuflash and evoscan so you can get more information from your ecu (injector latency, duty percentage, etc.) so you can document what happens in your log to give everyone on here more a basis to give you advice.
